Description

Job Purpose: The Pediatric Skilled Nursing (PSN) Child Care Teacher is responsible for successful individualized educational programs for students with special healthcare needs, including assessment, curriculum implementation, physical, emotional, intellectual, and social growth, and practical program communication.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Develop and organize daily program plans, curriculum, and materials with the assistance of a childcare teaching assistant and therapy staff, ensuring students' needs are being met throughout the day based on their strengths and weaknesses.

  • Understand and communicate the needs of children, their families, and the relationship between these needs.

  • Direct individual and small group instruction to implement child-based educational and developmental goals.

  • Oversee developmental assessment of individual children and regularly monitor educational progress.

  • Provide support and modifications suggested by the child’s Collaborative Support Team to facilitate goals.

  • Demonstrate sensitivity and the ability to work with a diverse population of children with special health care needs.

  • Assist in orienting parents to the PSN community and communicate regularly with parents and the child’s support team.

  • Plan and provide training and support for center staff and families regarding established goals.

  • Understand typical and atypical child development from birth through 21 years of age.

  • Assist with student’s personal hygiene needs as necessary.

  • Works in partnership with the quality department to develop appropriate measures to support program outcomes.

  • Complies with the program’s policies and procedures for cleaning and disinfecting within the department.

  • Complies with the program’s PPE and Infection Control policies to ensure the safety and welfare of staff and clients.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure and Credentials:

Minimum Required Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Minimum Required Experience : Experience with young children in a city environment with special health care needs and/or in an inclusive setting is preferred. Experience in sensory integration and augmentative communication systems is desired. Thorough knowledge of early childhood education principles, techniques, and developmentally appropriate practices can translate this knowledge into practical application within the classroom environment. Experience with pediatric special needs clients is preferred.

Required License – Certification – Registration Must meet the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families Administrative Code DCF 250 licensing rules for Childcare Teachers. DCF 251.05(1). Must either be CPR certified at the start of employment or complete a CPR certification course within the first 90 days. Must maintain active CPR certification through periodic renewal as dictated by the certification. Pass a pre-employment physical examination, drug screen, TB test, and background checks. Membership with the Registry with the minimum level 3 certification. Willing to take courses to gain levels of the Registry/maintain certification.

Physical Requirements, Visual Acuity, and Work Conditions:

Physical Requirements : Occasionally, must be able to push/pull/lift/move objects weighing at least 50 pounds at a distance of 450 feet. Must be able to safely push a person in a wheelchair on a level floor or a wheelchair ramp in various weather conditions. Must be able to transfer a person from a wheelchair to the toilet, chair, or van seat/car with the use of a gait belt and/or manual or power Hoyer lift.

Visual Acuity: The worker must have close visual acuity to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal.

Working Conditions : Ability to successfully deal with change and potentially stressful situations. This position is responsible for the supervision and safety of consumers in both standard program settings and a variety of settings in the community. As such, this position must be able to observe consumer activities, detect areas of danger, distinguish when consumers who are non-communicative are in need of personal care, and converse clearly with consumers and other people in the community frequently. PSN operates from 6am to 6pm 6 days a week and requires flexibility to cover the needs of the business as it evolves and changes.
