Job Description Summary

The part-time Wildlife Health Specialist will provide temporary support to the Wildlife Futures Program in the capacity of veterinary medicine and assessment of health risks for Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) in Pennsylvania. Specific responsibilities will include working with Wildlife Futures personnel to prioritize health threats to SGCN and identify potential research, surveillance, and management actions for the PA Game Commission and Fish and Boat Commission’s State Wildlife Action Plan (2025-2035).

  • Identify and prioritize threats to health of Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) in Pennsylvania based on primary literature search results.

  • Work with Wildlife Futures veterinarians to identify research and surveillance priorities, as well as potential management actions using preferred agency lexicon and formatting.

  • Participate in meetings with Wildlife Futures personnel and agency staff to review recommended research, surveillance, and management actions and make revisions accordingly

  • Contribute to editing relevant sections of the final synthesized summary of findings and recommendations and to the wildlife health section of the 2025-2035 PA WAP.

Position contingent upon Grant Funding.

Qualifications:

A DVM is required, with 3-5 years of experience in fish and wildlife health assessments and diagnostics, preferably within or in close collaboration with a state fish and wildlife agency.

Employee must have experience writing guidance documents for agency biologists and other wildlife professionals.

Employee must have expertise and experience with health and diagnostics of a variety of free-ranging wildlife, with proven experience with freshwater fish and other aquatic species.
