Job Description Summary

The Wildlife Futures Program (WFP), a wildlife health partnership between the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine (Penn Vet) and the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) is seeking a Veterinary Epidemiologist to join our team. In this role, the Epidemiologist will provide guidance to Wildlife Futures and PA Game Commission personnel on best practices for data collection and management related to wildlife disease surveillance programs and research activities and will contribute to development of research study design. They will conduct disease risk assessments to determine the relative importance of various health threats to wildlife, which will help the PA Game Commission to prioritize resources for surveillance and intervention strategies. This position will contribute to discussions on study design to support research projects and ensure that the approaches used are appropriate to the research question and any analyses performed would have sufficient statistical power. They will also provide support for the Wildlife Futures’ Shared Wildlife Health Information System (SWHIS) and its applications for visualization and spatial analyses of wildlife diseases in Pennsylvania. Participation in the preparation of scientific papers and grant proposals, and attendance at scientific meetings is also required.

The position is located at PennVet New Bolton Center in Chester County, PA. New Bolton Center is located in the beautiful Brandywine Valley where there are many nearby opportunities for outdoor recreation and cultural attractions, including Longwood Gardens, Brandywine River Museum of Art, vineyards, breweries, and a vibrant restaurant scene including downtown Kennett Square.

Job Description

Job Responsibilities

  • Support the development and implementation of statistically robust disease surveillance programs for early detection and monitoring of emerging and re-emerging wildlife diseases.

  • Conduct detailed disease risk assessments to identify and evaluate potential threats to wildlife health, focusing on priority species as defined by the PA Game Commission.

  • Offer expert support for the creation of study protocols, data collection methods, and analytical approaches to ensure rigorous and effective research outcomes that aid in disease management

  • Provide support for the Wildlife Futures’ Data Analyst to maintain and develop the Shared Wildlife Health Information System (SWHIS), the Wildlife Futures’ online wildlife health database

  • Communicate and relay results to PA Game Commission personnel and to various interdisciplinary teams of academic researchers both at Penn and collaborating institutions

  • Leading and working collaboratively to prepare manuscripts and grant submissions

  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

  • PhD in Veterinary Epidemiology with specialization in wildlife health and 5-7 years experience. Demonstrated experience designing disease research surveillance programs and conducting risk assessments, particularly in wildlife health and disease applications. Strong analytical skills with proficiency in working with large, complex datasets. Proactive, flexible, and innovative; can adapt to changing priorities and needs with an ability to work under short deadlines. Demonstrated proficiency with analytical and geospatial applications including R, C++, ArcGIS, and QGIS. Experience modeling in a Bayesian framework preferred. Excellent communication and teamwork abilities with demonstrated experience working in interdisciplinary research environments and collaborating closely with state agency and federal partners. Proven ability to convey complex information to diverse audiences is required.
