TITLE:Dental Hygienist

STATUS:Full Time

LOCATION:Kanza Health Clinic, Newkirk

QUALIFICATIONS:

Dental hygienists are required to earn a minimum of an Associates degree or certificate from an accredited dental hygiene school and hold a State license in order to practice. Dental hygienists are expected to be competent in multiple areas of dental health including: completing dental prophylaxis and non-surgical periodontal therapy; providing oral cancer screening and radiographic studies; charting conditions of dental caries and disease; providing preventative care, and performing procedures in compliance with the Dental Practice Act.

RESPONSIBILITES AND DUTIES:

  1. Prepare treatment room for patient, ensuring adherence to all clinical and infection control protocols.
  2. Prepare patient for dental hygiene treatment by welcoming, seating, and draping patient. Explain and demonstrate oral hygiene instructions (tooth brushing, flossing, nutritional advice, and smoking cessation) and answer all patient questions.
  3. Manage instrumentation for dental hygiene treatment by sharpening, sterilizing, and storing instruments in an organized manner.
  4. Complete oral assessments including: reviewing the patients dental history; evaluation of the gingival condition, dentition, and intraoral/extraoral tissues; oral cancer screening; and periodontal and dental charting.
  5. Take and interpret dental radiographs; ensure diagnostic quality of radiographs.
  6. Complete dental prophylaxis and non-surgical periodontal therapy by removing calculus and stains from the dentition and beneath gingival tissues; place subgingival antimicrobial agents as indicated by the patients periodontal condition.
  7. Apply anti-caries agents such as fluorides and other preventative agents as indicated by the condition of the patients oral health.
  8. Administer local anesthetics and/or nitrous oxide analgesia as indicated by the patients oral health needs or as directed by the dentist.
  9. Fabricate temporary restorations, clean and polish removable appliances, remove cement from crowns and bridges.
  10. Serve as an active participant in the management of medical and dental emergencies by following instructions from the team leader, maintaining BLS certification, locating and bringing emergency drugs and oxygen delivery systems, and alerting first responders.
  11. Maintain accurate and detailed treatment notes including vital signs, medical and dental histories, dental and periodontal charting, and treatment rendered.
  12. Ensure compliance with HIPAA regulations and maintain all confidential information.
  13. Protect patients and employees by maintaining a safe and clean work environment and complying with all OSHA, CDC, ADA, and clinic procedures, rules, and infection control regulations and guidelines.
  14. Ensure functional operation of dental equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements, following manufacturers instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, calling for repairs, maintaining equipment inventories, evaluating new equipment and techniques.
  15. Maintain dental supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level, anticipating needed supplies, placing or submitting orders for supplies, and verifying receipt of supplies.
  16. Conserve dental resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish dental treatment.
  17. Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.
  18. Contribute to the clinical team by participating in team meetings, assisting colleagues with clinic duties, and disseminating information as indicated.
  19. Primary dental clinic personnel in charge of community outreach including the initiation and organization of outreach activities and programs.
  20. Complete any other duties as assigned by immediate/controlling supervisor and/or dentist.

All new hires will be required by the Kaw Nation (post-hire) to submit to an employment drug screen. Failure to pass the post-hire drug screen will lead to withdrawal of the job offer or termination of employment. All new hires must be able to stand, walk, stoop, bend, kneel, pull, push and lift a minimum of 25 lbs.
