Burns & McDonnell International Accounting Manager - Corporate Accounting & Finance (Kansas City) in Kansas City, Missouri


Reporting to the International Accounting Director, the International Accounting Manager is responsible for managing the international accounting team, which oversees statutory and consolidated financial reporting and revenue recognition for engineering, procurement, and construction contracts of international business units.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  •        Establishes a vision for and assigns responsibilities to team members to support a high level of client service to achieve business objectives while providing engaging career opportunities for team members

  •        Recruits and hires new team members and retains existing team members by providing personalized training, development, and career growth opportunities

  •       Guides complex accounting topics, including, but not limited to complying with ASC 606 and/or IFRS 15 accounting standards to support accurate project level forecasting and revenue recognition

  •       Assists with researching new accounting standards and provides guidance and leadership for the implementation of new accounting standards or business processes within statutory and consolidated financial reporting frameworks

  •       Oversees the International Accounting team’s deadlines and key financial cut-offs throughout the year, particularly fourth quarter and year-end deadlines

  •          Oversees the International Accounting team’s involvement in the annual business planning process and monthly variance analysis of plan vs. actuals for international operations

  •          Supports international business expansions by researching new locations and assists business leaders with financial modeling and impact analysis

  •          Assists project teams and leadership with the build-up of pricing, reviewing of contract terms and conditions, and evaluating risks associated with foreign engineering, procurement, and construction projects

  •          Supports numerous foreign statutory audit requirements and the consolidated group audit as required

  •          Anticipates and proactively guides the International Accounting team in solving problems through creativity, foresight, and sound judgement

  •          Supports formal and informal trainings and implementation of best practices for international projects and business units

  •          Evaluates and supports increased efficiency of business processes or improvements using automation, outsources of resources, and other business tools

  •          Strategizes with the International Accounting team on additional ad hoc reporting and opportunities to executive management either within accounting or international business units

  •          All other duties as assigned


  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.

  • Minimum 8 years of private or 5 years of public accounting experience. Prefer 10-12 years of private or 6-8 years of public accounting experience; 2-4 years of construction engineering industry experience is also preferred.

  • Ability to balance and prioritize multiple day-to-day and ongoing projects simultaneously

  • Proficient in Excel (pivot tables and lookups) and PowerPoint, with experience in Power BI or similar tools a plus

  • CPA preferred but not required.  Previous supervisory experience preferred. 

  • Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.  

  • Ability to influence, lead, and manage change thoughtfully and positively.  Must possess strong project management skills and a strategic perspective.
