Job Description


The Surgical Technologist First Assist (STFA) provides immediate support to the surgeon and acts as a vital resource to the OR clinical staff, based on the STFA scope of practice. The STFA will provide preoperative support in preparation for the surgery to include collecting/confirming patient information; ensuring preop tests and labs are completed. Support to the surgeon will include ensuring safety protocols are in place, assisting in positioning and draping the patient, clamping, suturing, injecting, and other support actions as directed.

Minimum requirements:

  1. High school Diploma or GED.

  2. Graduate from an NBSTSA accredited surgical assisting program

  3. Active CSA (Certified Surgical Assistant); must maintain active status to retain employment

  4. 2-3 years experience as a surgical technologist

  5. Demonstrated experience and ability to work successfully in a team environment

  6. Ability to stand for the majority of the work time; sometimes wearing a 10 lb. x-ray apron for several hours at a time; lifting 50lbs. pushing/pulling 125lbs.,frequent lifting 1-25 lb. sterile trays during the course of the day.

  7. Good communication and written skills.

  8. Ability to handle stressful situations and changing conditions; flexibility to adapt to scheduling changes and changes in patient condition. Good time management skills and ability to be self-directed.
