(2) Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB), located in Kaneohe, Hawaii. Position will be based at the Hawai?i Institute of Marine Biology in the laboratories of Dr. Rob Toonen and Brian Bowen (ToBolab.org). Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

DUTIES: HIMB provides unparalleled research opportunities, in particular due to its unique location on Moku o Lo?e Island (Coconut Island) surrounded by the coral reefs of Kaneohe Bay on the windward side of the island of Oahu ( 24 km from the main university campus in Manoa). Some examples of projects currently underway include wildlife conservation genetics, taxonomy and coral reef biodiversity surveys, monitoring for alien invasive species, quantifying marine connectivity, coral reef conservation and restoration, rapid stress testing to identify resilient corals, technological solutions to reduce coral bleaching, 3D photogrammetry and environmental DNA (eDNA) monitoring. These projects require a range of laboratory, field, computational, quantitative and reasoning skills, and may require the successful candidate to work on any aspect of these various projects. Assists a large interdisciplinary team to manage data, maintain server cluster, provide coding and bioinformatic assistance, and perform research to meet the goals of extramurally funded research projects. Involves various aspects of assisting the team in the laboratory, field, and on the computer as requested to reach the goals of multiple funded research projects. Maintains laboratory server cluster and NAS data backup systems. Provides constructive and positive mentoring of junior laboratory members and interns working to assist with meeting project goals. Acts as a senior laboratory member in overseeing and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. Trains students in computing, coding and bioinformatic techniques. Prepares results for publication and presentation at scientific conferences. Aids PIs in reporting requirements for UH and sponsor. Operates small boats, performs in-water surveys and snorkels or SCUBA dives to support laboratory personnel, deploy or recover experimental structures, and collect environmental or biological samples at field site(s).

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

PhD from an accredited college or university in Ecology, Marine Biology, Oceanography, Engineering, Mathematics, or related field.

EXPERIENCE

One to three (1-3) years of experience processing, manipulating, analyzing, and publishing datasets, with particular emphasis on any of the following data science focus areas: R coding and BASH scripting, RAD-seq and Pool-seq analyses, bioinformatic pipeline development and validation, 3D photogrammetry, environmental DNA (eDNA) laboratory and bioinformatic analyses.

KNOWLEDGE

Strong knowledge of computer hardware for server maintenance, coding and scripting for data management and analyses, data visualization in R programming language, bioinformatic analyses of DNA sequence data. Demonstrated ability to work in both laboratory and field settings. Strong knowledge of computing skills required to analyze scientific data (e.g., statistics and data analyses in R, or bioinformat cs). Working knowledge of field techniques, such as small boat operations, snorkeling and SCUBA diving.

ABILITIES and SKILLS

Publication record that illustrates an ability to conduct novel, independent research, and to push projects through to completion. Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills. Strong attention to detail, and meticulous work style, as evidenced by previous research experience and peer-reviewed publications. Excellent time management skills, including the ability to meet project goals in a timely manner, and follow through on projects to completion on time and within budget. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and to communicate research findings at professional meetings and in high-quality peer-reviewed journals. Ability to perform hands-on laboratory benchwork and conduct fieldwork in coral reef environments. Able to operate small boats. Must be SCUBA certified (NAUI, PADI, etc.) and meet the standards established by the University of Hawaiis and/or programs diver certification process (which meets the standards set by the American Academy of Underwater Science) and hold the current certifications in CPR, First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen Administration, and maintain throughout duration of
