Director of Operations (Department of Transportation Projects)

Reports To: General Manager or Vice President

The Director of Operations is a senior-level position. Requires efficient use of personnel and company assets to maximize production. Maintain a positive working relationship with clients, as well as other customers. Promotes additional work with clients. These are primarily Department of Transportation projects, but may also involve other markets that the company is involved in. Responsible for overseeing all aspects of the company’s operations, including supply chain management, quality control, production scheduling, budgeting, risk, legal and more.

American Lighting and Signalization (ALS) provides street lighting and traffic signalization construction, maintenance, and emergency response services in the Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic United States. Our major customers include state departments of transportation (DOTs), investor-owned and municipal utilities, commercial retail land developments, and commercial road contractors.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Creating budgets and financial plans to support the organization’s long-term goals.

  • Reviewing organizational structures and suggesting changes to improve efficiency.

  • Preparing responses to government agencies regarding specific regulations or policies affecting the organization.

  • Ensuring that customer satisfaction is maintained by monitoring the quality of service provided by staff members.

  • Overseeing the planning and execution of organizational activities such as meetings, conventions, or trade shows.

  • Reviewing employee performance and providing feedback to ensure that employees are meeting company standards.

  • Coordinating with vendors regarding product delivery schedules and quality control issues.

  • Reviewing employee complaints about workplace conditions or discrimination claims.

  • Managing human resources issues such as hiring, firing, training, and compensation.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must possess a strong knowledge of field operations and have demonstrated leadership abilities.

  • Candidates should have at least 2 years related experience with Department of Transportation projects.

  • Strong skills in Microsoft Projects, Excel, Office and Access Data Base.

Education & Experience:

  • A college degree in business, engineering, or technical field is preferred. Significant industry experience may be substituted for education. Must be able to read engineering drawings and possess experience managing subcontractors.

Pre-Screen:

License & Certifications:

  • A valid Driver’s License is required.

Travel:

  • Required travel: up to 40%.

Physical Requirements:

  • Rare: (less than 10%): crawling, climbing, gripping, lifting up to 50 lbs.

  • Occasional: (up to 33%): standing, stooping, kneeling, squatting, body-twisting, sense of touch, manual dexterity, lifting over 10 lbs. to 50 lbs., reaching, range-of-motion, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing ladders, climbing stairs, balancing.

  • Frequent: (up to 66%): walking, sitting, climb on/off the truck, reading, lifting up to 10 lbs.

  • Continuous: (up to 100%): speaking clearly, seeing distant, seeing, hearing-speech-range, depth-perception, color vision.
