Summary:

Facebook's Enterprise Engineering team develops and maintains scalable products that power the enterprise. Enterprise Product Applied Research team is composed of applied quantitative and computational experts using machine learning, statistics and operations research to bring in step-level improvements in efficiency and scalability across the entire suite of enterprise products. We’re looking for an Applied Research Manager to lead a team of highly skilled Applied Research Scientists. This team plays a key role in reimagining productivity by applying state of the art research to bring step level improvements to diverse aspects of the enterprise. You will be working with one of the richest data sets in the world, cutting edge technology, and the ability to see your insights deliver impact for one of the largest enterprises in the world. The perfect candidate will have a background in machine learning, applied statistics or a related technical field, will have experience working with large data sets, and will have some experience building software. You are scrappy, focused on results, a self-starter, and have demonstrated success in using applied research to drive impact for large organizations.

Required Skills:

  1. Lead highly skilled research scientists, providing mentorship and career guidance to members of the team

  2. Apply your expertise in machine learning, data mining, quantitative analysis, experimentation and the presentation of data to build ML, AI and Optimization capabilities in Enterprise Products

  3. Partner with engineering teams to solve problems and identify trends and opportunities

  4. Design and prototype new algorithms, optimization methods, and system architectures and get hands-on in implementation and development work of the projects

  5. Manage development of data resources, gather requirements, organize sources, and support product launches

  6. Build cross-functional relationships with Engineering, Product and Analytics teams to shape long-term roadmaps with a balance of scientific rigor and strategic considerations

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Ph.D. or Masters degree in quantitative field (e.g. computer science, engineering, operations research, electrical engineering, statistics, mathematics and related fields)

  2. 4+ years of industry experience in an applied research organization within relevant fields

  3. 2+ years of leadership experience for applied research teams

  4. Experience in initiating and driving projects to completion with minimal guidance

  5. Experience with communicating results or work and establishing confidence among audiences who do not share your disciplinary background or training

  6. Understanding of modern machine learning techniques and their mathematical underpinning

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience working with large data sets and distributed computing (Hadoop, Hive, Spark, etc.)

  2. Experience in object oriented programming such as Python, C++, Java

  3. Experience using deep learning, natural language processing or computer vision in a production environment

  4. 2+ years of tech lead management experience in a highly technical and/or applied research team
