Our UPMC Chautauqua laboratory team is excited for your interest in our casual Specimen Processor position! In this role, you’ll dedicate 12 hours per week, covering variable shifts and rotating holidays and weekends.

Specimen Handling and Distribution:

• Receive, sort, and identify specimens from various sources.

• Process and distribute specimens to relevant technical sections.

• Enter requisition information and patient results into the computer system.

• Monitor pneumatic tube and courier deliveries to ensure timely processing.

Quality Assurance and Safety:

• Investigate and resolve any specimen-related issues promptly.

• Separate specimens by centrifugation and label aliquot tubes.

• Follow health and safety regulations for handling biohazardous samples.

Communication and Documentation:

• Answer phone inquiries related to specimen collection and results.

• Verify patient specimens against requisitions and labels.

• Properly document specimen details in the Laboratory Information System.

Specimen Transfer and Disinfection:

• Prepare, package, and send specimens to external locations as needed.

• Prioritize and share specimens according to laboratory policies.

• Disinfect the work area as required.

Training and Orientation:

• Assist in training new laboratory specimen processors.

• Perform routine technical and clerical duties as directed .

Required

• High School diploma or equivalent.

• Good oral and written communication skills required.

• Ability to communicate effectively with all age groups and populations of external and internal customers (as well as co-workers) both by telephone and in person.

Preferred

• Three to six months of experience in a clinical laboratory, physician's office, or other medical environment preferred, including knowledge of or experience in Medical Terminology and Laboratory Information systems.

• Three to six months of experience in a service environment including call center, customer service center, or product distribution/fulfillment center preferred.
