Job Description

The Fleet Management Division is actively seeking a Welder.

This is skilled craft work in welding or cutting metallic articles, parts, or materials. The work requires knowledge of the techniques, methods, and procedures used in the welding trade which involve the use of specialized equipment and specialized skills acquired on the job or through specialized training. Contacts require courtesy, tact, and effectiveness in dealing with others to request or provide information, ask questions, or obtain clarification. The work is semi-routine in that tasks are covered by somewhat diversified procedures and precedents, but some latitude is permitted to consider the most appropriate method, technique, or procedure to follow. The work is patterned involving similar situations and generally requiring only the choice of the correct procedure. The work is performed in a controlled environment where there are some risks and hazards, but they are known, predictable, and controllable. Operates a metal brake, sheer, iron worker, sheet metal roll, cutting and welding machines and related equipment, hand tools, heavy machinery, and a motor vehicle. Fabricates and installs wood decking. The physical demands may involve lifting or moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds. The work is performed under general supervision where the work assignments are varied and, although subject to standard practices and procedures, the worker is permitted some latitude to set priorities subject to the superior's approval.

Examples of Work

  • Welds or cuts metallic articles, parts, or materials to include structural load-bearing welding.

  • Dismantles, refurbishes, and remounts bodies and accessories of vehicles.

  • Reads and interprets blueprints and sketches and lays out work.

  • Fabricates parts and assemblies from plans or sketches.

  • Fabricates and installs wood and/or metal decking.

  • Fabricates and repairs of chain link and metal fencing.

  • Depending on assignment, fabricates and installs utility security cages.

  • Depending on assignment, repairs playground metal components.

  • Depending on assignment, repairs park shelter posts and beams.

  • Requests, receives, and stores supplies and materials.

  • Inspects tools and equipment and makes minor adjustments and repairs.

  • Tracks labor hours for work orders using a computer.

  • Travels off-site to perform welding repairs as required.

  • Operates a computer utilizing web-based applications.

  • Operates a metal brake, sheer, iron worker, sheet metal roll, cutting and welding machines and related equipment, hand tools, heavy machinery, and a motor vehicle.

  • Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville’s competencies.

  • Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the techniques, methods, and procedures used in the welding trade.

  • Knowledge of tools and equipment used in the welding trade such as, metal brake, sheer, iron worker and sheet metal roll

  • Knowledge of safety procedures associated with the welding trade.

  • Skill in operating heavy machinery.

  • Ability to weld stainless steel, aluminum, cast iron and other materials commonly used.

  • Ability to fabricate parts and assemblies from plans or sketches.

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and sketches and lay out work.

  • Ability to lay out, cut and install wood decking.

  • Ability to perform arithmetic computations.

  • Ability to maintain applicable records.

  • Ability to operate a computer utilizing web-based applications.

  • Ability to operate a metal brake, sheer, iron worker, sheet metal roll, cutting and welding machines and related equipment, hand tools, heavy machinery, and a motor vehicle.

Open Requirements/Supplemental Information

  • Two years of education and/or experience in welding which must have included fabricating metals.

  • If assigned to the Fleet Management Division, must possess minimum hand tools required.

LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:

  • A COJ Welder's Certificate issued by the City of Jacksonville is required during the six-month probationary period and must be maintained during employment in this class.

  • A valid driver's license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class.

  • Must meet standards required to obtain a City of Jacksonville driver’s certification.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • The probationary period for this class is six months.

  • This classification performs safety-sensitive functions and is subject to pre-employment, random and other drug/alcohol testing programs as set forth in the City of Jacksonville’s Drug Free.
