Job Description
Under general supervision, patrols City beaches, parks and ocean waters to ensure proactive and expeditious accident prevention and response; responds to City beach and water-related accidents and emergencies; counsels public to encourage compliance with state and local laws, including beach ordinances; maintains lifesaving and other related equipment and facilities; and performs related duties as assigned.
The employee regularly works under outdoor weather conditions, is routinely exposed to the sun, may be exposed to extreme heat or cold; works on uneven and/or slippery surfaces and is periodically exposed to hazardous conditions/situations. Lifeguards work under the direction of the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department.
Examples of Work
Provides general assistance, information and instruction to the public regarding beach, water and other related public safety issues; receives, responds to and/or resolves questions, inquiries and complaints from the beach-going public; if warranted, refers requests and complaints to management; provides guidance, warnings and announcements for the public's benefit and information; administers basic first aid for minor injuries.
Counsels and educates public as to beach ordinances including those related to animals, alcohol and public gatherings.
Cleans, services and general up keep with vehicles, boats and equipment and participates in the daily upkeep of facilities and grounds.
Participates in educational courses and training in lifeguarding techniques and equipment, medical aid and a variety of other subjects related to lifeguarding; studies and learns local ocean, surf, weather, beach and environmental conditions; studies and learns departmental operations and procedures.
Open Requirements/Supplemental Information
Applicants must be 16 years of age upon hire.
All applicants must have a physical from their physician prior to working; successfully pass a city background screening and drug test provided by the city.
Must complete a 500 meter/550 yard swim within 10 minutes in a pool environment to be considered for employment.
Must complete a 1-mile run in less than 8 minutes.
Must be aquatically adaptable in the ocean/surf.
LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:
- Candidates must obtain Lifeguard Certification, First Responder, Open Water Lifesaving, Emergency Responder, and AHA BLS (CPR) for the Health Care Provider. Training will be provided by the City of Jacksonville once selected.
NOTE:
- The City of Jacksonville will provide Emergency Responder classes after you have been selected for employment as well as CPR and United States Lifeguarding Association Certification.
USLA OCEAN RESCUE LIFEGUARD TRAINING:
Ocean Lifeguard Training will be conducted on the weekends at Hanna /Huguenot Park.
All new Ocean Rescue candidates must complete all of the scheduled training to be considered for employment. Returning Ocean Rescue lifeguards are required to complete 16 hours of concurrent training (at least two days of the scheduled training period).
TESTING:

If selected for employment, you will be required to schedule an appointment and attend one of the mass hiring dates TBD at City Hall.
You must be present for one of the Mass hiring days. If Selected, you will be notified in advance of these dates.

Social Security Card
Certificates of training and/or documentation of any lifeguard related training such as EMT, First Responder, first aid, etc.
