Job Description

The Neighborhoods Department is currently seeking a Mosquito Control Technician II.

This is technical work in the investigation and treatment of mosquito breeding areas. The work requires knowledge of work instructions; work routines and procedures used in mosquito control and requires use of basic skills in arithmetic, reading and writing. Contacts require courtesy, tact and effectiveness in dealing with the public and others, and include contacts to request or provide information, ask questions, or obtain clarification; interaction with the general public including responding to general inquiries, participating in outreach and educational programs, and representing the division at meetings as needed. The work is performed following established routines, standing instructions, and established procedures, but some variation in the sequence of procedures used is permitted based on situations encountered in the workplace. The work is patterned involving similar situations and generally requiring the choice of the correct procedure. Work is performed primarily outdoors where risks and hazards are substantial, generally unknown, unpredictable, and possibly uncontrollable. Operates specialized mosquito control equipment and vehicles, and mobile communication equipment which requires specialized training and on-the-job experience and standard office equipment such as personal computer. The physical demands consist mainly of working with control products, walking, bending, performing minor maintenance on equipment and vehicles, and may include lifting or moving objects weighing up to 50 lbs. The work is performed under general supervision where the work assignments are subject to instructions and established work routines, and the worker is given latitude to rearrange the sequence based on changing work situations, or work flow.

Examples of Work

  • Inspects known breeding areas to determine the relative mosquito larval population.

  • Performs mosquito landing rate counts and investigates oviposition sites.

  • Interviews, researches and responds to citizen inquiries and service requests.

  • Collects and identifies mosquitoes.

  • Records data pertaining to inspections.

  • Operates motor vehicles equipped with mobile communication equipment.

  • Operates control products application equipment.

  • Applies mosquito adulticides and larvicides.

  • Surveys established catch basin routes, updates and modifies as needed.

  • Calibrates, maintains, repairs, and cleans equipment.

  • Maintains yard and buildings.

  • Responds to emergency activation and recovery in accordance with administrative direction.

  • Operates standard office equipment such as personal computer using word, spreadsheet, database, mobile devices, and other related applications.

  • Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville's competencies.

  • Performs related work as required.

  • Ability to communicate mosquito control procedures to the public.

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to perform basic computer data entry and retrieval.

  • Ability to record data.

  • Ability to operate standard office equipment such as personal computer using word, spreadsheet, database, mobile devices, and other related applications.

Open Requirements/Supplemental Information

  • Two years of education and/or experience in pest control work.

  • Possession of a Public Health Pest Control Certification from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services may be substituted for one year of experience.

LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:

  • Must obtain certification from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services in Public Health Pest Control within the six month probationary period and maintain same during employment in this class.

  • A valid driver's license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class.

  • Must qualify for prior to appointment, obtain and maintain during employment in this class a City of Jacksonville Certification as a Public Driver.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • The probation period for this class is six months.

  • This classification performs safety-sensitive functions and is subject to pre-employment, random and other drug/alcohol testing programs as set forth in the City of Jacksonville's Drug Free Workplace Policy (0401).
