University of North Florida MOCA Curatorial Assistant in Jacksonville, Florida

Nature of Work: The Curatorial Assistant, under the direction of a Curator or above, plays an integral role in presenting innovative exhibitions by the finest international, national, and regional artists.

Typical Responsibilities: Assist Curator, Registrar, and Preparator with all aspects of collection and exhibition organization including locating potential loans, loan correspondence, data entry, image scanning, generating checklists and other reports, compiling installation requirements and restrictions, etc. Adheres to exhibition planning process timelines. Assist Curator and Marketing department with exhibition-related publications by locating images, securing copyright permissions, compiling research as directed, fact checking texts and back matter, mailing catalogues to photo and object lenders. Assist Curator with writing exhibition-related didactics including object label copy and wall texts. Prepare Acquisitions reports and PowerPoint presentations for potential Permanent Collection objects; provide information to Registrar, work with donors and galleries as needed. During a declared emergency, this position may be required to perform specific job related duties at a designated off-site location or place of residence.

Required Qualifications: This position requires either (a) Masters degree from an acceptable accredited institution in a directly related area of specialization; (b) Bachelors degree from an acceptable accredited institution in a directly related area of specialization and two years of experience directly related to the job functions; or (c ) 6 years of direct experience.

General Description / Primary Purpose: The Curatorial Assistant, under the direction of a Curator or above, plays an integral role in the creation and presentation of the exhibition program of the museum. This role assists in maintaining and growing the collection of the institution; and coordinates with staff throughout the museum to ensure the smooth integration of communications related to the Curatorial Department across all departments.

Job Function:

  • Assist Curator with all aspects of exhibition organization and collection maintenance. This includes organizing and adhering to exhibition planning process timelines, lender and artist correspondence, exhibition design, generating checklists and other departmental reports, and maintaining the records of the Department.
  • Assist Curator and Marketing department with exhibition-related publications by locating images, securing copyright permissions, compiling research as directed, fact checking texts and back matter, and overseeing the mailing of catalogues to photo and object lenders.
  • Assist Curator with writing exhibition-related didactics including object label copy and wall texts.
  • Prepare reports and PowerPoint presentations for the purposes of, but not limited to, docent training, proposals for new exhibitions and new acquisitions.
  • During a declared emergency, this position may be required to perform specific job-related duties at a designated off-site location or place of residence.

Marginal Functions:

  • Maintain good working knowledge of the Museum's policies, procedures, educational practices, and ideologies.
  • Uphold the Museum's collection and exhibition policies.
  • Provide limited oversight of docents, curatorial volunteers, and interns with their assigned projects as required.
  • Participate in Public Programs and Community Outreach as needed on and off site
  • The incumbent develops procedures for performing a variety of complex duties within established guidelines has considerable freedom while the work is in process and receives instructions on new assignments
  • This position assists in conceiving and guiding exhibitions that shed new light on and lead to a better understanding of particular works, artists, movements, cultures, or historical moments in the history of art.
  • This position interprets exhibition s rategy and museum accreditation standards and practices as outlined by the American Alliance of Museums
  • The Curatorial Associate has a high level of public contact with museum patrons, board members, funders/donors and media.
  • This position assesses the proprietary nature of any early exhibition strategy to determine if confidentiality is appropriate.

Departmental Requirements:

  • Experience in 20th and 21st century art field
  • Experience curating exhibitions and directing artists'projects.
  • Recent examples of scholarship in the field of modern and contemporary art, particularly public programming and publications.
  • Excellent research, writing, and public presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated aptitude in administrative and managerial skills.
  • Experience in leading and managing staff and volunteers.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills with the ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience collaborating with the Museum'sdevelopment team on grant and sponsorship proposals.
  • Excellent computer skills, including the most recent versions of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) as well as Filemaker or other relational databases.
  • Maintains confidentiality of museum strategy and operations as appropriate. Supervision Exercised: None Supervision Received: The position reports to the Curator and works closely with the registrar and the preparator.

Level of Public Contact:

  • The Curatorial Associate has a high level of public contact with museum patrons, board members, funders/donors and media. Monetary Responsibility: Policy-making and/or Interpretation:
