University of North Florida Laboratory Technician in Jacksonville, Florida

Nature of work : This is work performing established laboratory and/or research procedures. Typical Responsibilities:

  • Performs a variety of standard tests and analyses.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of equipment.
  • Dissects tissues and prepares specimens and samples for study.
  • Performs field work by gathering data and collecting samples.
  • Collects and organizes data and documents results.
  • During declared campus emergencies, this position may be required to perform specific job related duties at a designated off campus location or place of residence.

Required Qualifications: High school diploma and two years of experience directly related to the job functions. Directly related college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Nature of Work - This is work providing support to the oversight of Biology research laboratories.

Typical responsibilities: Placing orders for laboratory consumables and equipment. Coordinating laboratory safety training by faculty, staff, and students, and maintaining records pertaining to safety training and other issues related to lab safety. Maintaining laboratory equipment and facilitating equipment repairs, when needed. Contributing to the oversight and maintenance of research labs and research facilities, including the departments vivarium (animal research facility), greenhouse, and multiuser equipment. Assisting in the oversight of budgets related to internal research grants, faculty start-ups, and foundation accounts. Participating in departmental meetings. Other appropriate duties, as deemed necessary by the Office Manager and/or Department Chair.

General description/Primary Purpose: This position is the primary building coordinator and facilitates departmental research through assisting faculty with ordering research supplies and equipment. The incumbent will:

  • Initiate the ordering process by obtaining competitive quotes, ordering research supplies, and updating faculty members on the status of their orders.
  • Provide research faculty with detailed spending analysis on a monthly basis.
  • Maintain research equipment and service contracts, and arrange for equipment repairs or service calls, when necessary.
  • Facilitate safety and inventory inspections, and ensure that the department is compliant with university, state, and federal regulations.
  • Ensure the departments vivarium (animal research facility) and greenhouse are properly maintained.
  • Assist in the organization and preparation of research laboratory spaces.
  • During declared campus emergencies, perform specific job-related duties at a designated off campus site or place of residence.
  • Serve as designated contact for emergency equipment failures in the Biology building.
  • The incumbent will be provided with a University purchase card (p-card) and submit monthly reconciliations to ensure that expenditures meet with University standards.
  • Contribute to the completion of other duties consistent with the position, as determined by the Office Manager and/or Biology Chair.
