The office of Institutional Research & Planning (IRP) provides official, accurate, and unbiased information and analysis about the university in support of institutional planning, decision-making, and reporting obligations. The office serves as an information clearinghouse for the university, producing the online Factbook and providing data about the university to governmental agencies. The office also engages in in-depth research projects and report writing on topics of special concern to the provost and other university leaders.


Under general supervision of the Associate Vice Provost for Institutional Research and Planning, this position uses the university's data to inform university decision-making, planning, policy formation, and evaluation of institutional effectiveness.

As an individual contributor, you are self-motivated, can prioritize duties, and will possess the following:

  • The ability to act proactively and think creatively about the ways to bring data to bear on the questions facing higher education institutions.
  • The skills required to manipulate, analyze, and combine data from various sources within the university (including student records and employment records) and outside the university (such as publicly sourced data from that National Center for Education Statistics and consortial data exchanges).
  • The ability to create and deliver nuanced and tailored reports, data visualizations, and presentations appropriate for tailored audiences within the university.
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining strong relationships with leaders, colleagues in diverse functional areas, and technical counterparts.
  • A willingness to serve on committees and plan the meetings, prepare meeting materials, and implement decisions and assignments.

Other required qualifications include:

  • Master's degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., education, sociology, economics, statistics) with a minimum of 3-5 years of experience in higher education.
  • A good understanding of how higher education institutions work and the landscape of higher education across the United States.
  • Familiarity with quantitative and qualitative methods, statistics, survey research, and analytics.
  • Experience with data analysis software (e.g., SPSS, Stata, R) and experience with data visualization software (e.g., Tableau, Power BI).
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to describe quantitative information in a clear, cogent, concise, and compelling fashion.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with a variety of others; cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Preferred qualifications for the position include:

  • Doctorate degree.
  • Experience with programming languages (e.g., Python, SQL), regression analyses, designing data visualizations, and working in partnership with academics.
