Position summary

As a Metallurgical Technician you will be responsible for ensuring that internal and external provided parts being processed meet specifications. Report non-conforming parts to the appropriate distribution/group. Activities are primarily performed in the metallurgical lab. However, you will also perform inspections/audits on the floor and collect samples from the floor. You will have the opportunity to prepare samples for examination in the lab and help with testing in the lab when there is a specific problem and may be asked to assist in other needed testing when it is necessary to assist with root cause of issues. You may assist with any other metallurgical problems that arise.

Metallurgical Technicians m ust maintain their own work schedule with little supervision to cover production requirements. There will be regular contact with production supervisors and quality auditors, which requires tact to avoid friction and impose influence to obtain results. The described duties are semi-diversified and somewhat repetitive in nature. You will perform analyses of facts to determine actions that could have an impact on final product reliability.

Key accountabilities

  • Checks submitted components for print specified heat treat characteristics which can include any of the following: hardness, case depth, microstructure, carbon analysis, N2 layer quality and N2 layer thickness. This is done in the lab using various measuring equipment including Rockwell Hardness Tester, Universal Testing Machine, Carbon Determinator and Micro Hardness Tester (Knoop and Vickers). Is also responsible for bend strength testing in the lab of certain designated pins.

  • Maintains and cleans equipment as per established met lab procedures.

  • On a prescribed schedule, performs and records audits of component heat treat characteristics and cleanliness for compliance with engineering and metallurgical specifications.

  • Checks Test Equipment for proper calibration used in testing parts. Inspects any non-conforming material from this operation.

  • Assists with failure analysis of components and assemblies.

What we are looking for

  • High School diploma or equivalent is preferred

  • One to three years of related experience is preferred

  • Basic computer skills using Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word is required

  • Knowledge in engineering print reading and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing is preferred

  • Proper use and calibration of precision measuring instruments is preferred

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary range from $47,000 - $70,000 based on experience
