About the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics

The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics (MBG), a very large, diverse, and active research and teaching department that encompasses both statuary (CALS) and endowed (Arts) components, shares a leading role in research and teaching in modern biology at Cornell University. We have an administrative team of ten (10) staff supporting 36 faculty, 65 laboratory and teaching support staff, and over 200 graduate students in 3 graduate Ph.D. fields.


The Opportunity

Are you ready to take the lead in shaping the future of graduate education? We're seeking a motivated and collaborative individual to serve as our Graduate Field Coordinator within the Molecular Biology and Genetics (MBG) department. As the primary liaison between the Graduate School, our field Directors of Graduate Study, and students, you'll play a pivotal role in ensuring the success of our graduate programs in Biophysics; Genetics, Genomics & Development; and Biochemistry, Molecular, & Cell Biology. Key Responsibilities:

  • Field Administration and Leadership: Act as the primary Graduate Field Coordinator, overseeing administrative functions and operations. Collaborate with field leadership on strategic planning, admissions strategies, and day-to-day management. Coordinate the administrative team supporting graduate fields to ensure seamless operations.
  • Admissions, Recruitment, and Orientation: Manage the admissions process, including application review, selection, and admissions decisions. Assist in organizing recruitment events and activities to attract prospective students. Coordinate orientation programs for incoming students to facilitate their transition into the graduate program.
  • Student Support: Serve as a central point of contact for current students, addressing inquiries and providing support as needed. Monitor student progress and funding status, offering guidance and assistance to students facing challenges. Collaborate with faculty and relevant departments to support students experiencing academic or personal difficulties.
  • Systems and Record Management: Utilize CollegeNet and Salesforce systems to track application status, student progress, and other relevant data. Generate reports and analyses as required by internal stakeholders or external agencies. Ensure accuracy and integrity of student records and information.

This is a full-time (39 hours/week) Contract College position that is based in Ithaca, NY. This position is eligible for a 4:1 campus-to-home hybrid work arrangement after a successful period of training and acclimation. This hybrid work arrangement is subject to change at any time. Work hours are flexible, but will be mutually agreed upon on.


What We Need

We are looking for a team member who is self-motivated, utilizes excellent communication skills, and is tech savvy. Additionally, you will:

  • Hold an Associate's degree and 4 to 6 years relevant experience, or equivalent combination.
  • Be proficient with business or technical programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Acrobat, Drupal).
  • Demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Have experience leading a team to meet goals.
  • Navigate a complex organizational structure.
  • Take initiative, meet challenges with resourcefulness, have ability to work independently and must be comfortable with multitasking.
  • Be able to work well with a variety of diverse people, including but not limited to faculty, staff, students.
  • Be very adaptable as the field structure and organization evolves.
  • Handle sensitive/confidential material in a professional manner.
  • Work independently while supporting the efforts of an overall team.

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Graduate field experience or prior student services experience.
  • Knowledge of Cornell procedures and policies.
  • Knowledge of CollegeNet Admissions System and Peoplesoft programs preferred.
  • Web design/maintenance a plus.

  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement after a successful orientation period. Employees typically perform this role remotely 1 day per week and on-campus 4 days per week. The New York Convenience of employer guidelines require New York State individual tax reporting and withholding for this position. Additional individual state income tax filings may also be required if working temporarily outside of New York State.
