The Opportunity

This position works out of our Dallas, TX location in the Core Lab Division. Our diagnostic solutions are used in hospitals, laboratories, and clinics around the globe. The crucial information derived from our tests, instruments and informatics systems are often the first step in patient care decision making for hundreds of health conditions from heart attacks to blood disorders to infectious diseases and cancers.

As the Manager Research and Development , you’ll be responsible for technical Management of R&D (Hardware, Systems, Mechanical, Electrical or Verification & Validation) personnel. Manages system(s) design, design risk reduction, implementation, verification, and validation of future or derivative instrumentation. Manages department budgets, HR merit increases and promotions. Administers R&D scope, staffing and budget guidelines for feasibility and development phases of systems development programs.

What You’ll Work On

  • Manages experience professionals who exercise latitude and independence in their assignments.

  • Influence engineering budgets and capital plans.

  • Interprets and administers policies and procedures that may affect department and subordinate sections.

  • Assists in planning and organizing and leads some aspects of a project regarding budgeting, staffing, communication, and conflict resolution.

  • Participates in and presents at briefings and technical meetings for internal and external representatives.

  • Participates in development initiatives for ADD R&D personnel include sponsoring of intern students, recruiting activities, technical training, etc.

  • Multi-disciplined thinker, influences system design and prioritizes engineering technical risks in developing new systems.

  • Cultivates excellent working relationships with outside Abbott partners and then ensure effective communication and problem solving (including people/personality issues).

  • Has functional R&D resources reporting to him/her.

  • Accountable for managing development and design aspects of new or derivative systems.

  • Assignments are defined in terms of activities and objectives.

  • Work is reviewed upon completion for adequacy in meeting objectives.

  • Interacts frequently with internal personnel and external representatives at various levels.

  • Manages departmental budgets of approximately $1-5MM.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in technical or scientific discipline, OR an equivalent combination of education and work experience.

  • Minimum 6 years relevant experience.

  • Must have project management experience in managing multiple projects.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree preferred.

  • Able to multi-task across multiple projects in various stages of development.

  • Able to work in regulatory environment.

  • Can identify areas of workflow that are not optimal and being able to drive process improvements.

  • Proficient with SolidWorks, Siemen’s Team Center, and Solutions Business Manager

  • Understands how to implement cable designs.

  • Understand aspects of Design Planning, CR creation, and how to write DRJs to facilitate drawing release.

The base pay for this position is $109,300.00 – $218,700.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
