Job Summary

Position is responsible for supporting the Division of Planning with activities pertinent to researching, revising, drafting and updating zoning and related land use ordinances, rules and policies. The position will also assist with training and implementation of land use regulations. .

Position Responsibilities

• Research, and review issues pertaining to the built environment

• Monitor and analyze local land use petitions, such as variances and permits, as well as local and national development trends

• Develop and prepare short land use studies and reports to advise administration and other city staff on good land use relationships and related issues

• Provides land use and procedural advice to applicants, public, city/county staff and elected officials

• Conduct training opportunities for planning staff, enforcement staff, boards and commissions, stakeholder groups and members of the public

• Draft and analyze potential ordinance revisions, rules, and regulations as directed

• Prepare meeting materials, facilitate meetings and synthesize results

• Receive, listen to, and document comments from the public on City’s zoning needs

• Assist in the adoption of zoning ordinances, rules and regulations by decision-making bodies including the Metropolitan Development Commission and the City County Council

• Monitor the General Assembly for bills related land use

• Must maintain confidentiality at all times

Qualifications

Minimum Job Requirements and Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning, Public Affairs, Law, or related field with three (3) years of relevant experience in public planning and zoning agency and/or private consulting firm. Membership in the American Planning Association or other related professional organization. Must have thorough understanding of land use terminology, principles of legal or technical writing, zoning principles and practices, current land use law and contemporary land use concepts and regulatory techniques. Working knowledge of Microsoft software is required, experience with ArcMap, InDesign or Illustrator are desired. Personal experience in as well as research and survey procedures/ methodologies, excellent writing skills, strong problem-solving skills, ability and openness to collaborate, and public speaking and effective presentation skills.

Preferred Job Requirements and Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Urban Planning, Public Affairs, Law, or related field with three (3) years of relevant experience in public planning and zoning agency and/or private consulting firm. two (2) years of experience may be substituted with an applicable Master's degree in planning, law, government, or related field. Membership in the American Planning Association or other related professional organization. Must have thorough understanding of land use terminology, principles of legal or technical writing, zoning principles and practices, current land use law and contemporary land use concepts and regulatory techniques. Working knowledge of Microsoft software is required, experience with ArcMap, InDesign or Illustrator are desired.
