About the Governor's Summer Internship Program (GSI):

The Governor’s Summer Internship Program (GSI) is designed to give college students real-world, hands-on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the program will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more.

Role Overview:

As an intern with the Investigations and Intelligence division, you will manage the flow of intelligence information through Regional Managers to ensure effective communication. Immediate distribution of data to facility investigators is essential when necessary. The position also requires monitoring the ViaPath mail and Incarcerated Individuals' phone systems to extract intelligence crucial for maintaining the safety and security of the facility. Additionally, you will assist the Chief, Deputy Chief(s), and Regional Managers during investigations.

Salary Statement:

The hourly rate for this position is $16.24 for those who do not hold a bachelor’s degree & $17.24 for those who hold a bachelor’s degree or higher by the time the internship starts.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Ensure compliance with 28 CFR part 23 and I.C. 5-2-4

  • Manage requests for information (RFI) and requests for service (RFS) along with tips and threats relevant to the safety and security of the facility

  • Receive, validate, classify, and share inquiries to the appropriate staff

  • Log information to be presented in monthly reports

  • Manage incarcerated individual phone system (GTL) based on facility needs and as directed by the Chief, Deputy Chief(s) or Regional Managers

  • Monitor all available media sources, and intelligence sources, to timely identify incidents and patterns among the incarcerated individual population

  • Maintain chain of command and apprised of daily operations and assignments

  • Be able to extract and disseminate intelligence to facility investigations with the guidance of Central Office Investigation Staff

  • Be familiar with IDOC databases, and IDOC partners. Build and maintain relationships with other Central Office Investigations staff

  • Assist the Deputy Chief of Investigations in maintaining a centralized report of the investigations data base and ensure case files are properly filled out and accounted for

  • Assist in gathering intelligence and putting together Intelligence Reports, and Link Analysis charts

  • Monitor social media and media for IDOC incarcerated individuals, gang trends, refer tips to the proper facility/organization/Central Office Staff

  • Complete special projects as assigned by the Chief, Deputy Chief, and Regional Managers promptly

  • Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.

  • Academic work in related field

  • Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels

  • Ability to conduct well-informed research

  • Ability to solve complex, critical problems

  • Ability to review and make recommendations on proposed changes to relevant policies and procedures

    Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

    This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period
