Position Summary

As a Staff Automation Engineer at Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., you will have the unique opportunity to influence and drive decisions in new product development, technology invention, and long-term initiatives and strategies for our Bio Processing Group (BPG). In this role, you will collaborate with BPG businesses and the broader Thermo Fisher company to enrich and enable robust teamwork and partnerships for breakthrough research.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Domain expert for automation engineering solutions and control systems from PLC to DCS and SCADA for both stand-alone and integrated systems.

  • Extract important data from P&IDs, wiring diagrams, SOPs, Control Philosophy, and related documentation for project execution.

  • Work with various control system types and bioprocessing equipment for automation control.

  • Collaborate with global software team members to ensure the crafting and delivery of quality software.

  • Provide accurate estimates for completing planned tasks and software development with the highest quality.

  • Lead Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), on-site commissioning, and remote assistance.

Minimum Qualifications / Experience / Required Skills

  • Bachelors/ master’s degree in electrical / electronic / instrumentation engineering or equivalent experience, with 10+ years of Industrial Automation domain experience.

  • Experience in automation control systems, system architectural designs, motion/motor controls, programming, PLCs, HMIs, DCS and SCADA, etc.

  • Proficient in Rockwell/Siemens PLC, Ignition SCADA, GE Ifix and DeltaV DCS.

  • Craft and maintain tag databases based on project requirements. Knowledge of OPC servers (such as Kepware) is required.

  • Communication / Network Protocols – OPC, Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet/IP, MQTT, Profinet etc.

  • Knowledge of 21 CFR Part 11, S88 batch controls is required.

  • Relevant working experience in MS SQL and PostgreSQL.

  • Experience with Python scripting.

  • Familiarity with upstream and downstream biological processes.
