Director of Building and Grounds

Reports to: Superintendent

Basic Function: The Director of Building and Grounds is responsible for planning, coordinating, and directing the District’s facilities and maintenance and custodial services. The Director will provide oversight for projects involving new and remodeled buildings, building systems, and all site and facility amenities. The Director will ensure compliance with District policies and all applicable codes related to facilities.

Education and Related Work Experience:

Minimum of three years experience in facilities management and organization.

PK-12 school facility management experience is strongly preferred.

Essential Functions:

  • Examine school buildings regularly and direct the planning, estimating, and scheduling of all assigned projects, preventive maintenance, and planned maintenance work to ensure the effective use of personnel, finances, and equipment resources, including but not limited to, all heat pumps, air handling units, HVAC components, pumps, chillers, and other building support devices being sure to keep complete records for future uses.

  • Assign and supervise crews for maintenance work.

  • Develop a system for dealing with emergency repair problems with efficiency.

  • Coordinate with the Business Manager and Superintendent to perform analysis of budgets and develop an ongoing plan for major district projects.

  • Maintain an inventory and recommend the purchase of suitable supplies, tools, and equipment.

  • Order materials as needed, and make recommendations of supplies and equipment for purchase.

  • Provide preventative maintenance training and provide direction for maintenance staff.

  • Maintain all preventative maintenance records and tracking tools.

  • Schedule annual inspections of fire alarm systems.

  • Coordinate removal of snow and ice from sidewalks, parking, loading dock area, and playground before the start of the school day.

  • Coordinate lawn care.

  • Work with all building principals to resolve any operational, custodial, maintenance, or ground issues that are vital to the instructional program.

  • Keeps the principals and administration informed on the scheduling and completion of all maintenance work at all facilities.

  • Coordinate the hiring process for temporary and full-time employees following district procedures.

  • Assure evaluation of maintenance and custodial personnel in accordance with the evaluation cycles for classified personnel.

  • Participates in training to provide or receive information and update skills as changes occur in the district.

  • Participates in all safety drills and supports the emergency response teams in crisis situations to ensure district readiness in emergencies.

  • Monitor the time records of all maintenance and custodial employees in the school and certify them for salary payments.

  • Adhere to applicable state and federal laws, rules and regulations, board policies, and administrative rules related to the operations and maintenance of school facilities.

  • Maintain high integrity and confidentiality in the school operation.

  • Be knowledgeable of and abide by all school board policies, procedures, and other applicable laws.

  • Cooperate with and work in a courteous manner with co-workers and other personnel.

  • Dress appropriately for the position and work required.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

Significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling up to 50 pounds individually or more than 50 pounds with assistance.; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 5% sitting, 80% walking, and 15% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness. The employee may be required to be “on call” for emergency situations regarding all areas of supervision that may develop in the school district.
