The SLS SE&I and Human Exploration Team provides systems engineering support for the Space Launch System’s (SLS) Systems Engineering & Integration Office (SEIO). This position will support the Lead Systems Engineer (LSE) in element-to-element integration. The LSE Office is responsible for interface management, flight vehicle-level requirements, verification, post flight analysis, SEIO risk management, tracking technical performance metrics, orbital debris assessment, off-nominal analysis, human factors, mission requirements, mission integration mission certification, and models and simulations. This office along with others, lead the technical integration role in support of the SLS SE&I Office Manager and perform the continual examination of the element and vehicle performance, operational conditions, and consequences for the SLS subsystems that constitute the SLS flight system architecture and interactions with Orion flight system and launch site infrastructure.

This is a full time, on-site position.

Responsibilities

In this position you will identify and track both SLS Elements and SLS Level II Systems Engineering and Integration (SE&I) vehicle interdependencies to provide insight into and early identification of potential Element-to-Element issues which could impact SLSP deliveries.

You will conduct deep dives into specific Element, Discipline or Program issues and anomalies which require cross-Element or cross-Program coordination with multiple programmatic and technical stakeholders.

You will also participate, as directed, in various Integrated Task Team (ITT) meetings; Program to Program (P2P) meetings; major Moon-to-Mars (M2M) and program-level meetings to collect the required information for supporting the system engineering task.

The duties of this position may include, but are not limited to, providing periodic status inputs to the project, supporting reviews, working groups, and various boards.

Degree from an ABET accredited university preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Ph.D., with a minimum 14 years of experience, Masters with at least 18 years of experience, or BS with at least 20 years of experience.

Candidate is required to have:

  • Launch Vehicle design, development, integration, and operations experience.

  • Comprehensive understanding of Marshall Space Flight Center’s processes and working within the NASA environment.

  • Broad understanding of NASA Systems Engineering processes.

  • Personality traits indicating a self-motivated, effective team player, familiar with working in a dynamic work environment and can get a task completed with minimal direction. Must be able to build collaborative relationships within and across organizations.

  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, customer relation skills, and presentation skills.

  • Intermediate skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Outlook).

Candidate is desired to have:

  • Extensive experience and expertise in the coordination and integration of all launch vehicle system elements (Propulsion, Structural, Avionics, and Software) and the ability to effectively communicate significant programmatic and technical issues and potential resolution options to all levels of management.

  • Thorough knowledge and experience in complex systems engineering life cycle end-to-end development ranging from requirements development, functional design, hardware integration, and requirements verification.

  • Thorough understanding of spaceflight hardware and software design, development, testing requirements, and vehicle integration.

Essential Functions

Work Environment

Office and laboratory environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%)

Physical Requirements

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (40%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance

Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
