Jacobs ESSCA Group Senior Welding Engineer #ADV00094W in Huntsville, Alabama

This position is part of the Space Exploration Group (JSEG) support to the NASA EM32 Welding and Manufacturing (WandM) team under the Engineering Services and Science Capability Augmentation (ESSCA) contract to the NASA MSFC Engineering Directorate. Responsibilities: The primary focus of this position is manufacturing large aluminum aerospace structures using both friction-stir welding and fusion welding processes. Education and experience relevant to this position will be evaluated from that perspective. The position's primary responsibilities are to: Develop welding techniques, procedures, and application of welding equipment to problems involving fabrication of metals, utilizing knowledge of production specifications, properties and characteristics of metals and metal alloys, and engineering principles. Conduct research and development investigations to develop and test new welding processes and procedures, improve existing or develop new welding equipment, develop new or modify current welding methods, techniques, and procedures, discover new patterns of welding phenomena, or to correlate and substantiate hypotheses. Prepare technical reports resulting from research and development. Establish welding procedures to guide production and welding personnel relating to specification restrictions, material processes, pre- and post-weld heating requirements which involve use of complex alloys, unusual fabrication methods and welding of critical joints. Evaluate new developments in welding field for possible application to current welding problems or production processes. Direct and coordinate technical personnel in performing inspections to ensure workers' compliance with established welding procedures, restrictions, and standards. Exchange ideas, information, or offer technical advice concerning welding matters. Perform experimental welding to evaluate new equipment, techniques, and materials. Serve as project lead engineer to manage specific assigned customer welding development and manufacturing development projects. Help other EM32 WandM Team customers understand and resolve problems related to their welding manufacturing processes. The selected candidate will serve as an expert for welding and welding manufacturing projects and work integrally with JSEG and customer engineers and engineering technicians. The selected candidate will provide professional, consultation, technical and specialty skill services as needed to resolve unprecedented and/or complex problems pertaining to design, development, analysis, integration, evaluation, testing, and verification of welding and welding manufacturing processes.

Job Requirements: A BS degree in Welding Engineering or related field is required. A degree from an ABET-accredited university is preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a minimum of an MS with at least 23 years of experience, or BS with at least 25 years of experience. The selected candidate must be able to obtain and maintain permission to operate customer-owned vehicles in support of work activities. The selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid driver's license, automobile liability insurance and successfully complete a company defensive driving training class. Relevant candidate work experience will be evaluated against ESSCA contract engineering labor categories. The selected candidate must be able to obtain and maintain the following customer safety certifications: Welding Safety The selected candidate must have demonstrated experience developing, understanding, troubleshooting and qualifying large-scale aerospace friction stir welding manufacturing processes. Experience with Gas Tungsten Arc Welding and/or Variable Polarity Plasma Arc welding processes on aerospace materials such as aluminum (alloys 2219 and 2195 preferred), stainless steel, superalloys and/or titanium performed by manual and mechanized techniques is also desired. The selected candidate mus be able to work hands-on with machine tool-like equipment involving electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic and mechanical components and systems. Previous experience working with the following specifications and standards is required: o ANSI/AWS D17.1/D17.1M:2017-AMD2, Specification for Fusion Welding for Aerospace Applications. o ANSI/AWS D17.3/D17.3M:2021, Specification for Friction Stir Welding of Aluminum Alloys for Aerospace Applications. o Previous experience working with the following specifications and standards is desired, but not required: o NASA-STD-6016, Standard Materials and Processes Requirements for Spacecraft. o NASA-STD-5006, General Fusion Welding Requirements for Aerospace Materials Used in Flight Hardware. o MSFC-SPEC-3679, Process Specification - Welding Aerospace Hardware.
