Overview:

As part of a small, passionate, and accomplished team of experts, you will be responsible for developing solutions to manufacturing challenges throughout all stages of the product lifecycle.

This role is one of a hardware owner, a product engineer, usually best filled by individuals who have had broad responsibility for aerospace hardware design, development, production standup, production stabilization, and production optimization roles in the product realization cycle.

This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment, adaptability, persistence, resourcefulness, engagement with team members, critical thinking skills, detailed attention towards safe and repeatable human spaceflight.

Core responsibilities can include:

  • Act as interface between machinists, fabricators, floor technicians, industrial engineers, design engineers and all internal/external suppliers to manage engagements, set expectations for product quality and delivery, and improve overall product and process results.

  • Focus on cost reduction, scrap reduction, lead time reduction, assembly ease, assembly speed, robustness of design, product protection/preservation, employee safety, etc.

  • Coordinate the introduction of production from design, to supplier, or in-house fabrication, into the manufacturing environment, oversee assembly of machined and fabricated components, and integration/inspection of assemblies, and disposition of non-conformances.

  • Translate engineering intent, drawings, and configurations into fully functional hardware by developing manufacturing work instructions to clearly define the following manufacturing processes: receiving inspection, fabrication, assembly, test, integration, and refurbishment.

  • Design, procure, install, and integrate custom manufacturing equipment and tooling

  • Act as interface between machinists, fabricators, floor technicians, industrial engineers, design engineers and all internal/external suppliers to manage engagements, set expectations for product quality and delivery, and improve overall product and process results.

  • Lead production readiness reviews, identifying and correcting ambiguous developmental work details into clear, concise, transferrable manufacturing plans eliminating the 'hidden-factory'.

  • Collaborate with external suppliers and manufacturing partners to ensure that hardware and equipment is manufactured, processed, tested, packaged, and delivered properly, on time, and on budget

  • Conduct and use data from DFM/DFA and PFMEA studies to drive improvement decisions

  • Define and support repair and rework activities for hardware.

  • Author dispositions when non-conformances and escapes are identified. Then perform root cause analyses and deploy corrective actions.

  • Conduct pre-ship reviews for major sub-assemblies and engines prior to movement between work centers and facilities, and hold post-ship debriefs to capture lessons learned

  • Create summary progress reports for group leads chronicling improvements made to all business metrics; quality, cost, delivery.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Aerospace or Automotive Engineering (other relevant fields may apply) from an accredited university

  • Five or more years of engineering experience working in an aerospace or automotive production environment, or similarly highly regulated industries

  • Proven experience and successful track record developing/integrating/improving new products and processes from design to build. DFM/DFA, design for cost/value-engineering experience.

  • Background in manufacturing in combustion devices, valves/pumps and similar active mechanical hardware

  • Experience in various hardware fabrication methods (ie. machining, brazing, welding, soldering, heat treatment, corrosion proof coatings)

  • Experience with non-destructive testing (NDT), both visual and non-visual (MPI, FPI, X-ray, CAT Scanning, Ultrasonic)

  • Working knowledge of GD&T and Drawing Interpretation, Jigs/Fixtures/Production Tooling, BOMs, Routings, Work Instructions, Component Inspection, Quality Testing, Configuration Management, Discrepant Material Disposition, Continuous Improvement, Mistake-Proofing

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic team environment supporting constantly evolving design iterations.

  • Flexibility with regard to occasional support of second shift and weekends.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen due to the nature of the work

Desired skills include:

  • Experience in integrating electronic control systems for testing is added bonus (for motor controllers to drive the Main & Bypass Valves for ATP)

  • Background in manufacturing other electro-mechanical components also desired (Actuators, Fans, Motors, Solenoids)

  • Material Resource Planning systems (SAP, Oracle, JDE, CostPoint, Epicor, Job Boss, etc.)

  • Manufacturing Execution Systems (Solumina, Maximo, CostPointMES, etc)

  • Design systems (CREO, AutoCad, Inventor, Solidworks)

  • Product Lifecycle Management systems (Windchill, Team Center, Enovia, etc.)

  • Experience with the design and manufacturing of aerospace and/or space-bound turbine engines
