POSITION OVERVIEW

Troubleshoots, maintains, manages, and upgrades existing instrumentation/communications systems to ensure an economical, safe, and accurate reporting of various plant processes. Researches and analyzes cause of failures; repairs, performs calibrations, replaces, and installs new equipment/components and related hardware to maximize functionality. Performs preventive maintenance ensuring safe, clean, and continuous operating conditions. Prepares and updates various records, logs, and reports. Operates test equipment to isolate software/hardware circuits or cable related problems. Repairs and calibrates all components of process control systems or data communication networks; troubleshoots and repairs both digital and analog electronic equipment to the component level. Responds to emergency calls during and after hours for various types of instrumentation and industrial control failures and shutdowns. Organize schedules and monitors work assignments. Research technical product specifications Inspects field locations to determine appropriate types and placement of instrumentation components for installation.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position routinely requires lifting moderately heavy items (up to 40 pounds) and very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis. There is routine exposure to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution.
This is a Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier II Level.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires an Associate’s degree (two-year program) in a computer science, instrumentation or electronics discipline or the equivalent, such as certification in a technical/specialty program of up to three years in duration.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Two years of experience in the design, installation, operation, and/or maintenance of a computerized data communications network or industrial control system are required.
Relevant experience (as described above) may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
A valid Driver License is required and Compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving.
PREFERENCES
Preference will be given to the candidates with a current State of Texas or City of Houston Journeyman Electrical License and experience in maintenance of industrial electrical/instrumentation systems. Preferences will also be given to applicants with extensive experience with remote installation, troubleshooting and resolving technical and system support issues, and other infrastructure components, PLC’s, and SCADA systems.
Preference will be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6..
