We have an exciting opportunity for a Structural Mechanics Systems Manager (Human Landing System) to join our team!

The Structural Mechanics Systems Manager (Human Landing System) will:

  • Manages human landing system spacecraft structural system design, development, testing, and evaluation activities of NASA engineers and commercial lander providers

  • Manages and guides development of structural system requirements, concepts, workforce resource loading, and schedules

  • Monitors status and recommends strategies to meet Project schedule commitments ensuring commercial providers remain within acceptable limits

  • Addresses structural problems that arise during spacecraft development and integration, as well as coordinating solutions between NASA and the commercial lander providers

  • Leads efforts to identify structural anomalies and provides technical expertise to determine engineering recommendations for issue resolution

  • Coordinate and lead review of commercial lander provider contractual deliverables and certification evidence to make readiness assessments for flight designs to be certified for human spaceflight and flight readiness

  • Integrate with other technical disciplines to resolve technical issues

  • Must be willing to occasionally travel to commercial lander providers and other NASA centers

  • Perform other duties as required

Here’s what you’ll need :

Requisition Qualifications:

This position has been posted at multiple levels. Depending on the candidate's experience, requirements, and business needs, we reserve the right to consider candidates at any level for which this position has been advertised.

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in Engineering and a minimum of 2- 5 years of experience in the field or in a related area

  • 3 years of experience designing, analyzing, testing, or building structures (internship and competitive school projects experience qualify)​

Requisition Preferences:

  • ​Bachelor's degree in aerospace, mechanical, or structural engineering

  • 5 years of professional experience, including management of engineering projects and/or technical trades

  • Familiarity with relevant NASA, DoD, ASME, and AIAA design & construction standards

  • Ability to perform trade studies using engineering first principles and fundamentals to make clear recommendations, even with partial information

  • Technical knowledge of human spacecraft systems and operations

  • Experience with interdisciplinary project management

  • Experience with developing and presenting executive summaries of status to drive decision making

  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) with the ability to succinctly present recommendations to other engineers, stakeholders, management, and executive staff

  • Leading development of flight structural hardware, production assessments, and verification of the processes used for aerospace vehicles and systems used in atmospheric and space environments

  • Performing structural design, analysis, and testing of human-rated spacecraft and advising senior management and stakeholder of technical issues

  • Leading the testing of structural systems, subsystems, and components to verify the function, efficacy, and conformance to design requirements of these structures

  • Developing, analyzing, and overseeing resources and schedules

Essential Functions

Work Environment

Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.

Physical Requirements

Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).

Equipment and Machines

Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).

Attendance

Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
