MD Anderson Cancer Center Research Laboratory Coordinator - Dr. Guarnerio's Lab (Genetics) in Houston, Texas

The Research Laboratory Coordinator provides supervision and technical management of the general laboratory operations of the Guarnerio Laboratory. The coordinatorapplies knowledge, technical expertise and experience to plan, coordinate, design, and carry out research projects in the department of Genetics. This position impacts cancer research projects by developing/maintaining programs and applications tailored to meet research objectives and makes them available to the wider cancer research community. This position impacts all aspects of running the Guarnerio laboratory, managing the computational analysis for multiple projects, and research collaborations throughout the institute.

Key Functions

· Research Expertise

o Plans, designs and initiates research experiments in a (semi-)independent manner . The following skills are required:

1) DNA, RNA and protein preparation

2) Real-time PCR

3) Western blot

4) IHC/IF staining

5) Cell culture

6) Basic procedures for tumor cells injection in mice

o Follows lab protocols and maintains accurate and detailed records of experimental data and procedures.

o Apply molecular biology skills to perform and supervise Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) sample and library intake and QC. Maintain detailed and well-organized records of protocols performed and results obtained. Compiles, writes and submits project results to Principal Investigator.

o Performs general bioinformatics analysis and provides software support for multiple projects .

· Laboratory Coordination and Administrative Duties

  • Organizes data and assists in writing of scientific papers for publication, grant applications and presentations at scientific meetings

o Organize, coordinate, and participate in scientific research projects under the direction of the Principal Investigator.

o Efficiently perform experiments, evaluate experimental results, and revise techniques or approaches to troubleshooting.

o Interact with the investigators to advise and guide on the best approach for their genomics studies.

o Monitor and maintain supply inventory so that workflow is not negatively affected.

o Maintains all laboratory equipment and recommends replacement or purchase of new equipment.

o Prepare all shipping packages for lab.

o Annotates and organizes tissue samples in -80C freezers, and cell lines in liquid nitrogen tank.

o Places all orders for lab reagents and supplies, research animals and mouse room cage-cards.

o Manage financial forecasting and reporting activities for the laboratory

o Manage and approve of all laboratory purchases and vendor negotiations.

o Oversees supply and equipment inventory, tracks expenses.

o Uses laboratory knowledge and expertise to identify and resolve research laboratory operational issues and interacts with others to resolve problems.

o Supervision and training of technical personnel.

o Assist in the hiring and selection process for new personnel.

o Supervision of student rotations. Introduce students to rotation, gauge competencies, prepare projects, and monitor performance.

o Works with laboratory safety officer to ensure compliance with state/federal and institutional guidelines in the storage, use and disposal of materials. Prepares annual EH&S safety inspection.

o Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

Required: Bachelor's degree.

Preferred: Master's degree.

EXPERIENCE

Required: Five years of experience in scientific, research or clinical laboratory to include three years in a lead/supervisory capacity. With preferred degree, three years of required experience in a lead/supervisory capacity.
