MD Anderson Cancer Center Research Assistant II - Holder Lab, Surgical Oncology in Houston, Texas
SUMMARY
The primary purpose of the Research Assistant II is to provide technical and coordination skills in carrying out various research projects.
JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
Research Projects and Initiatives
Assists principal coordination and execution of translational research projects. Exercises considerable imagination, initiative and inventiveness in planning and executing the details of experiments and in evaluating and interpreting the results. Ensures prompt and timely feedback to the PI about project progress.
Experimental Design and Execution
Conducts animal studies (GEMMs and patient-derived xenograft) pertaining to novel and existing therapeutic agents. Prepares samples for scRNASeq analyses to be submitted to the core. Acquires and storage of tumors treated as part of drug studies. Records, organizes and analyzes data obtained in animal experiments in accordance with the methods requested and maintains a functional breeding colony. Executes cohort studies of tumor-bearing mice treated with novel and existing agents. Proficiency in wet lab techniques (cell culture, flow cytometry. immunohistochemistry and cellular assays) are a must. Reads literature and confers with superiors regarding new procedures and modifies them according to the needs of the project.
Data Analysis
Designs and maintains reports (scientific and management) on the databases for various research studies. Assists the principal investigator with computing data into computerized databases, data analysis, and providing results in various formats such as tables, text, and figures as needed. Analyzes and evaluates research data and revises techniques and approaches to work problems. Proficiency in MS office is a must. Understanding of graphing and statistical software is highly preferred.
General Laboratory Management
Oversees the daily lab functions: supplies, ordering, general equipment maintenance and troubleshooting. Maintains a well-organized and stocked-up lab for optimal workflow. Promptly communicates with the PI and/or the lab manager to resolve any potential lab safety issues in a timely manner.
Publications/ Manuscripts/ Reports and Presentations Collaborates or assists with supervisor and senior research staff with preparation of reports and grant requests. Supervises technicians in their work and assists them as assigned or delegated. Independently write reports detailing methods, results, and impacts of assigned issues.

Required Education:
Bachelor's degree with major course works in one of the basic sciences.
Preferred Education:
Master's degree.
Required Experience:
One year experience in scientific or experimental research work. No experience required with preferred degree.
Preferred Experience/Skills:
Flow cytometry, Animal (mouse) handling, Immunohistochemistry, basic lab techniques (tissue processing, cell culture, cellular assays, IHC), must have wet lab and/or managing lab experience. Able to communicate clearly and promptly (written and verbal), and proficient in routine software (MS office, Graphing software), able to function independently under the guidance of the PI and exhibit curiosity and drive to move the research projects further. Must have excellent organizational skills.
