Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories Power System Protection Engineer in Houston, Texas

We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Power System Protection Engineer who is willing to explore and design automation and power system solutions. In this position, you will use your protection knowledge in designing and testing auto-synchronization, control, protection and automation solutions to prevent blackouts and help our customers protect and control critical electrical infrastructure and power systems worldwide.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop and implement automation, power system and auto synchronization schemes for customers.

  • Develop, troubleshoot and perform testing in the IEC-61131 platform for SEL PowerMAX application for Microgrid, Industrial and Utility customers.

  • Create technical documentation including design specifications, test procedures, user manuals.

  • Commission projects in the field

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including project managers, engineers and technicians to assess system requirements and implement protection and control strategies.

  • Follow and apply SEL Values, Principles of Operations, and World Class Manufacturing Principles.

    This job might be for you if:

  • You have a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Master's degree is preferred.

  • You enjoy working with logic engines, configuring networks, and working with SEL products.

  • You have knowledge in power systems and understanding of communication protocols (IEC-61850, DNP, Modbus, etc.)

  • You understand auto-synchronization, control, and protection schemes and want to utilize your protection scheme knowledge in designing better automation solutions.

  • You have 4+ years of automation, protection and/or power system experience.

  • You have relevant commissioning experience.

  • You are willing to travel 25%-30%.

  • You are familiar with relevant industry standards, such as IEEE, IEC, and NERC/FERC regulations.

  • You demonstrate problem-solving skills and the ability to analy ze power system challenges.

    Salary Range Data

    We anticipate filling this position as a Project Engineer II $112,000 - $137,000 per year. We are open to reviewing additional candidates with more or less experience and the pay range may differ if filled at a different level. Our pay ranges are determined by job, responsibility, and location. We base our starting pay offer and title on location and job-related factors such as candidate experience, training, knowledge, and skills.
