Operating Room Patient Care Technician

Partnered with Anesthesiology and Critical Care, the Division of Nursing and the Division of Surgery, this multidisciplinary team performs more than 15,000 surgical cases each year in more than 30 operating rooms spanning the Main Building and Mays Clinic.

The ideal candidate must have a high school diploma or equivalent and three years of relevant, stable work experience. Prefer recent experience working in critical care and/or procedural setting as a Patient Care Technician/Nursing Assistant. Must pass the pre-employment skills test as required and administrated by Human Resources. Should be open to on-call and weekends. Please note: Patients are under anesthesia, there will be little to no patient interaction or a need to check vital signs.

Shift: 2:30pm - 11:00pm

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION

Preparing Rooms for Surgery. This includes but is not limited to, cleaning, mopping, and wiping patients' rooms prior to and after surgery cases. Assists nurse with specific medical procedures such as Bronchoscope, Cystoscopy, and Endoscopy. Prevents or manages actual/potential patient problems by following nursing standards. Collects all supplies necessary for the assigned area using systematic and cost-effective methods. Collaborates with the caregiving team to facilitate and optimize the care of the patient. Transports patients safely to and from assigned areas using stretchers and wheelchairs.

Key Functions

Accountability:

  1. Utilizes time in an efficient manner by completing assigned responsibilities. Checks with ANM or OR Schedule Coordinator for additional assignments when free.

  2. Organizes workflow (contributes to on-time starts, works to turnover cases as efficiently as possible); uses resources efficiently (time, materials, supplies, equipment).

  3. Maintains stability in performance while under pressure and handles crisis and difficult situations without inappropriate emotionality.

  4. Puts away all supplies& equipment after case.

  5. Demonstrates knowledge of operational costs, participates in cost-saving strategies, and avoids wastes of supplies, resources.

  6. Completes annual self-appraisal and provides appropriate documentation.

Essential Performance Functions:

  1. Prepares and Maintains the Surgical Environment for the assigned patient(s).

  2. Provides direct patient care according to performance standards.

  3. Cleans and turns over the OR, preparing the surgical environment for the next patient according to performance standards.

  4. Performs transport and supply responsibilities according to the performance standards.

  5. Cleans the OR after the last case and prepares the room for closure according to the performance standards.

  2. Values the contributions of all team members and publicly recognizes their efforts.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent.

Must pass pre-employment skills test as required and administered by Human Resources.
