We have an exciting opportunity for aMetal Fabrication Technician III to join our team with the Operations & Testing Division.

This is a JETS II CBA position with Jacobs.

The Metal Fabrication Technician III will:

  • Preparation of setups, construction, handling, and processes for the purpose of building individual articles or assemblies made from metal or metallic materials.

  • Conduct metal finishing of components for chromate, alodining, anodizing, dying, etching, electro-polishing, testing and measuring of coatings and electroplating via specifications and applicable manufacturing processes.

  • Assemble parts using mechanical fasteners (bolts, screws, rivets, pins, clips, safety wiring, etc.).

  • Experienced use of sheet metal brakes, punches, and cutters to form enclosures, panels, and assemblies in any shape, angle, or curvature.

  • Ability to create slots, tabs, formed edges, rolled lips, dimples and creases, staking, and notches in metal.

  • Capable of bending tube in complex shapes, including long length runs, threading pipe and correctly flaring tubing.

  • Perform research, development, and documentation of finishing on exotic materials.

  • Metal cutting via shears, saws, oxy-acetylene or plasma cutters, and water jet.

  • Work from detailed drawings, sketches, assembly blueprints, or oral instructions.

  • Perform plating through common industrial methods.

  • Offers technical direction to customers on pre-fabrication reviews, modifications, or repairs.

  • Set-up of fixtures and jigs.

  • Operation of shop equipment to prepare metal for fabrication.

  • May provide minimal welding or brazing support.

  • May provide minimal manual mill or lathe support.

  • Perform preventive maintenance on shop equipment.

  • Train less experienced fabricators; general inspection of work.

  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.

  • Organize and properly store inventory, materials, and safety equipment.

  • Use of lift equipment as required.

  • Perform related duties as required.

Here’s what you’ll need :

Required Skills:

  • Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 12 years of fabrication experience with sheet metal in combination with metal finishing.

  • Proficient with bending tubing basic shapes for short runs and/or piping, threading or flaring ends.

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

Preferences:

  • Overhead crane experience.

  • Handling of NASA flight hardware.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Physical Requirements:

Requires Occasional:

  • Climbing and maintaining balance on ladders, scaffolds, structures, etc. above and below ground level.

  • Reaching for, handling, and manipulating objects and materials in all directions.

  • Kneeling, crouching/squatting and crawling from 1 to 30 minutes at a time.

  • Hearing with or without correction.

Requires Frequent:

  • Coordinating eyes, hands, and fingers to operate tools and equipment.

  • Lifting up to 40 pounds from ground level, waist level, and overhead (frequent).

  • Bending from 1 to 30 minutes at a time.

Requires Constant:

  • Carrying up to 40 pounds for 20 feet (continuous).

  • Standing.

  • Seeing with or without correction.

Requires the ability to:

  • Follow set procedures and standards.

  • Apply basic mathematical skills.

  • Plan and work selecting proper tools.

  • Compare and understand differences in the size, shape, and form or lines, figures, and objects.

  • Follow written and oral directions, plans and blueprints.

  • Picture and evaluate solid objects from drawings or diagrams using standards that can be measured or checked.

  • Recognize and report safety hazards.

  • Must be able to work in a fast paced team environment. Performs routine and/or non-routine skilled work, relies on experience and judgment to plan and execute tasks. Must be able to wear steel toed shoes. Respirator may be used when filling/using chemicals. High noise area on the ultrasonic cleaning area.

Work Environment:

The Manufacturing Facility is a large, climate controlled work area with an array of machining equipment. Exposure to uneven ground levels, various noise levels caused by power tools, machinery, equipment, etc. May be exposed to extreme hot or cold weather, excessive humidity rain, etc.

Equipment and Machines:

Operate and maintain shop equipment (shears, saws, drill presses, punches, rivet machines, sheet metal brakes, sanders, grinders, water jet, etc.), powered shop tools (grinders, wire wheels, snips, pipe and tuning benders, etc.), bead and sand blasters, lifts, mobile hoists (cherry pickers), chain hoists, overhead cranes, pallet jacks (powered and unpowered), hand trolleys, 4-wheel dollies, hand tools, stands, welding curtains, clamps, vises, potential forklift, and salt fog chamber. May operate welding and oxy-acetylene rigs.

Computer workstations, peripheral equipment to maintain/adjust database logs and records, and print documents. Other office machines (printer, fax, etc.).

Attendance:

Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.

Must be able to work in a team atmosphere. Must put forward a professional behavior that enhances productivity and promotes teamwork and cooperation. Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
