DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Houston Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to building a sustainable community and enhancing the quality of urban life by providing safe well-maintained parks and offering affordable programming for our community. To achieve this mission, HPARD is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic II to join its Facilities Maintenance & Development/ PLUMBING/POOLS team.

This individual will perform routine maintenance activities to equipment and facilities in the Parks and Recreation to ensure cleanness and safety. Inspect and repair pumps, motors, plumbing, fountains, and drains for the water distribution systems for the city’s swimming pools and water plays. Troubleshoot equipment and make recommendations for repairs. Maintains records of maintenance and repair work performed. Must be available to work evening, weekend and holiday if needed.

This position is designated among essential personnel under the City of Houston's Emergency Management Policy.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/ or assuming awkward positions for long period of time. There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises, and minor burns.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Specialized training in principles, procedures, practices routines or techniques in a specific area or trade, which might normally be acquired through up to 18 months of education or training beyond the high school level. Vocational competence in the operation of mechanical or electronic equipment may be required.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Six months of experience in building or mechanical maintenance are required.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

Must have a valid driver's license and comply with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP 2-2).

PREFERENCES

Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.
