DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Houston Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to building a sustainable community and enhancing the quality of urban life by providing safe well-maintained parks and offering affordable programming for our community. To achieve this mission, HPARD is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic II to join its Facilities Maintenance & Development/ Playground Safety/Day Use team.

This individual will perform routine inspections, and preventive maintenance on playground equipment, skate parks, exercise equipment, soccer goals, basketball courts, tennis nets, and supports. Perform manual repairs and duties as assigned. Operate hand tools. Inspect equipment and facilities in Parks and Recreation to ensure cleanliness and safety. Maintain records of maintenance and repair work performed. Must be available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays if needed. Report unsafe conditions and unsafe equipment. Perform other duties as assigned.

This position is designated among essential personnel under the City of Houston's Emergency Management Policy.

WORKING CONDITIONS

There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns. This position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Specialized training in principles, procedures, practices routines or techniques in a specific area or trade, which might normally be acquired through up to 18 months of education or training beyond the high school level. Vocational competence in the operation of mechanical or electronic equipment may be required.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Six (6) months of experience in building or mechanical maintenance are required.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

Requires a valid driver’s license and must comply with the City of Houston's policy on driving (A.P. 2-2).

May require a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

PREFERENCES

Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.
