Job Advert:

bp is seeking a dynamic individual with LNG regional experience and deal-making capabilities to join our LNG origination team.

bp’s LNG Book is a world class global Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) business. bp has term and spot supply contracts in North America, Africa, the Caribbean, the Middle East, Asia and Australia. bp has announced a strategy to grow its LNG business to 30 mtpa by 2030 and the LNG Book continues to develop new supply and sales opportunities in line with this objective.

The role of the LNG Book within bp’s trading and supply business is to:

  • Optimise the utilisation of bp’s LNG assets including supply contracts, shipping and market access rights.

  • Ensure bp’s market and supply commitments are met in the most effective way.

  • Provide liquidity to bp with regard to monetisation of upstream gas.

  • Enhance risk management of existing and planned LNG positions.

  • Capture trading value added through continuation and development of the merchant trade.

  • Effectively integrate both downstream and upstream sectors of the Gas Value chain to maximize group value.

The Atlantic LNG origination team is based between Houston and London covering European, African and American markets. It is responsible in the LNG Book for establishing and implementing the strategy for origination and marketing of bp equity and merchant LNG contracts in these regions. It is also responsible for the execution of contracts relating to short-term and mid-term trading activity carried out by the LNG trading and portfolio teams.

As LNG Originator you will be expected to engage effectively with assigned market counterparts and with bp LNG traders and originators, in-country commercial teams, LNG deal structurers and analysts, LNG operations and shipping, as well as bp legal, credit, and other functions.

Key accountabilities

  • Screen assigned markets in the Americas and maintain a robust hopper of opportunities for mid- and long-term sales and purchases in line with the LNG Book strategy.

  • Develop and manage relationships with counterparties in those countries. Make Key Terms proposals, progress buyers and sellers to detailed HOA negotiations, and negotiate and execute LNG SPA agreements.

  • Promoting bp access to spot and short-term LNG trading opportunities through negotiation, conclusion and implementation of MTAs and CNs, and ongoing management of MTAs.

  • Delivering commercial terms and secure binding commitments (prices, flexibility, shipping etc).

  • Acting as contract manager for executed SPAs as are assigned.

  • Working with Gas & Low-Carbon teams to maximize the value of bp's equity LNG and downstream positions.

  • Ensuring understanding and adherence to bp policies, trading compliance policies and standards, and to its Code of Conduct.

  • Supporting the LNG trading and portfolio teams in making offers or bids in the spot and mid-term markets, including participation in tenders.

Essential experience and job requirements

  • In-depth knowledge of LNG industry to engage with LNG counterparts and develop deals among a range of counterparts

  • Understand value drivers and identify counterparty perceptions of value

  • In-depth experience in understanding and negotiating LNG contracts

  • Strong record of commercial delivery and sound commercial decision-making

  • Understand risk and identify contractual mitigations, judging the trade-off between risk and return

  • Flexible and commercially focused, with a keen interest in trading and contracting

  • Open communication style and ability to build and nurture internal and external relationships

Desirable criteria and qualifications

  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in LNG trading and/or origination activities

  • Experience in LNG and/or gas project development

  • Experience in oil & gas upstream activities

  • Fluent in Portuguese and/or Spanish

  • Experience in project financing
