DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Houston Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to building a sustainable community and enhancing the quality of urban life by providing safe well-maintained parks and offering affordable programming for our community. To achieve this mission, HPARD is seeking a Groundskeeper to join its Recreation and Wellness - Golf Operations team.
The potential candidate will play a key role in the following duties:
Perform a variety of manual tasks like; planting/pruning/trimming trees and shrubs, trash pick up/debris removal, changing cups, re-locating tee markers, maintaining flags, and putting out ice water for customers.
Operate small equipment including hand mowers, shovels, rakes, line and hedge trimmers, blowers, edgers, and chains on all areas of the golf course.
Operate utility vehicles on the course and train in the operation of riding reel mowers and sand trap machines.
Perform turf maintenance tasks including aerification top dressing, fertilizing, vertical cutting and hand-watering.
Must be able to work early mornings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long period of time. There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold and moisture and air pollution. This position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to read, write and follow simple oral instructions as might normally be acquired through up to 8 years of formal schooling.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Six (6) months of experience in turf care or related ground maintenance are required.

PREFERENCES
Applicants with a minimum of six months of experience in turf care and maintenance (preferably golf course), possess the ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Applicants with experience in the operation of specialized golf course equipment and attachments are preferred.
Applicants with a valid Texas driver's license are highly preferred.
Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.
