Position Description

Responsible for design, operation, and permitting of salt caverns and depleted reservoirs used for the underground storage of natural gas. Knowledge of gas storage wellheads and wellbores including performing risk analysis on assigned gas storage assets, providing reservoir and salt cavern well integrity related technical support, documentation for PHMSA and the Texas Railroad Commission compliance reporting, development and continuous improvement of reservoir and salt cavern well integrity related programs, systems and applications. The Gas Storage Engineering Director will report to the Vice President of Gas Storage Engineering.

The primary duties of this role are as follows:

  • Plan and execute requirements of the KM’s 2600 O&Ms including identifying, prioritizing, documenting, and addressing integrity threats for assigned gas storage assets following recommendations from API 1170 and 1171 as applicable

  • Implement the Gas Storage risk assessment/threat evaluation, risk ranking, long term assessment planning, P&M measure determination and tracking

  • Coordinate data collection, understanding the risk algorithms, reviewing and confirming results, and utilizing the risk output to identify 5-year work plan

  • Initiate and lead interaction with appropriate subject matter experts and other stakeholders to meet deliverability, injectivity, and storage reliability requirements

  • Scope, coordinate development, test, implement, maintain and continually improve both new and existing applications and databases such as:

  • Gas Storage Database

  • Well Risk Matrix

  • Provide support on regulatory related response and special permits such as root cause analysis, developing and implementing response plans, and conducting special assignments related to alternative well MAOP or special permits

  • Provide training and support to other company groups as needed such as Field Engineering, Gas Control, Marketing, Corrosion, Engineering, Accounting, and Operations

  • Identify and present potential reservoir and salt cavern well integrity process improvements and follow-through with implementation once stakeholder/management agreement for the improvement is obtained

  • Review, edit and provide feedback regarding any proposed procedure or process variance requests in accordance with API RPs 1170 and 1171

  • Represent company in regulatory interactions with PHMSA and RRC as needed

    Work conditions:

  • Must be willing and able to work in a corporate environment in downtown Houston Texas

  • May require travel up to 20% depending on needs

  • Must be willing and able to carry a cell phone, laptop, and respond as needed

  • After hours and overtime work will be required from time to time

  • Extended periods of sitting may be required

    Position Requirements

    Position Requirements :

  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Geological Science

  • Demonstrated ability to scope, coordinate development, test, implement, document, maintain and continually improve operations and well projects

  • Experience working with reservoir and salt cavern well integrity datasets such as pressure test data, high resolution vertilogs and direct assessment records

  • Experience with MS SQL, Maximo, SCADA, Visio helpful

  • Strong effective, timely, clear and concise verbal and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills with logical thought processes

  • Demonstrated ability for focused attention to detail, wellbore and wellhead schematics

  • Ability and willingness to understand and implement all company/job related processes, procedures, guidelines and best practices

  • Ability and willingness to coordinate projects and programs with field operating personnel, project engineers, and outside entities maximizing the information made available within a defined annual budget

  • Must be accountable and manage activities to keep required work schedules, focus attention to details, and follow company policies and procedures within budget

  • Strong focus on safe work practices and active participation in the safety program

  • Ability to effectively organize, plan, prioritize, document, and complete work with detail knowledge of well prognoses

  • Ability to successfully work in team environment with a focus on both internal and external customers, regulators and emergency responders

  • Demonstrated initiative and adaptability to manage multiple work tasks and changing priorities

  • Ability to interpret industry and company standards and procedures

  • Strong computer skills including but not limited to advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint

  • Maintain a regular, dependable attendance and high level of performance

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and driving record satisfactory to the company and its insurers

  • Subject to PHMSA compliant drug testing program

  • 10+ years of underground natural gas storage or regulated gas industry experience with depleted reservoirs and salt caverns, Texas geologic knowledge preferred

  • Ability and willingness to perform all essential functions of the position including those listed above

Preferred Experience, Skills and Knowledge

  • Demonstrated ability to identify, characterize, communicate, and resolve complex well data issues in support of a quantitative well risk program

  • Demonstrated ability to identify gaps in processes and follow through with solutions

  • Demonstrated ability to review, organize, and utilize detailed information

  • Demonstrated ability to develop, write, and document processes and procedures

  • Knowledge and understanding of API RP 1170/1171 standards

  • Fundamental knowledge of gas reservoir and salt cavern and well integrity threats

  • Understanding of methods utilized for calculating failure pressures and safe pressure on wellhead and wellbore components

  • Knowledge of general UNGS well operations standards, practices and procedures
