CyrusOne Critical Generator Specialist, Operations Engineering in Houston, Texas

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Critical Generator Specialist to join our team at Cyrus One data center company. This Critical Generator Specialist will be responsible for overseeing and providing guidance for the installation, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of backup power systems for data center facilities. This role will provide assurance that the power supply to our data center remains uninterrupted during power outages, ensuring optimal uptime and the reliability of critical systems by providing guidance on performing routine inspections, maintaining generators, conducting repairs, managing fuel systems, and working closely with other maintenance teams to ensure system reliability. The Critical Generator Specialist will also be involved in coordinating and executing preventative maintenance programs and may be required to perform emergency repairs when necessary.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with large-scale generator systems, possess a strong understanding of electrical and mechanical principles, and have a background in supporting critical infrastructure in a 24/7 operations environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the installation, commissioning, and configuration of generator systems in the data center, ensuring optimal performance and compliance with safety standards.

  • Assist with the integration of backup generators with other critical power systems like UPS and automatic transfer switches (ATS).

  • Provide guidance on regular inspections and preventive maintenance on all generators to ensure readiness for emergency use.

  • Provide guidance on testing and monitoring of the performance of backup generators, including load testing, fuel system checks, exhaust systems, and battery charging systems.

  • Develop and maintain plans for monitoring generator systems for any faults, deficiencies, or signs of wear and corrective action to be taken as necessary.

  • Remotely diagnose and troubleshoot any issues with backup generators and related power systems during scheduled maintenance or emergency situations and communicate to the site team or local contractor steps to remediation.

  • Respond promptly to power outages or failures, ensuring the smooth transition between primary and backup power sources and assist local teams as required.

  • Utilize remote monitoring systems to track generator performance, fuel levels, and any critical alerts.

  • Provide guidance on the need for detailed reports on system status, usage, and any maintenance actions taken to maintain data center uptime.

  • Work closely with data center operations teams to ensure proper coordination during power tests, upgrades, and emergency response drills.

  • Train other team members on proper generator operation, maintenance procedures, and safety protocols.

  • Recommend and implement improvements to generator systems, including efficiency enhancements, capacity upgrades, or installation of newer technologies.

  • Assist in preparing backup power systems for data center capacity growth or expansion projects.

  • Provide guidance on the requirements to maintain accurate service records, log entries for repairs, inspections, and generator performance data.

  • Provide guidance to ensure all work complies with local regulations, industry standards, and internal policies for data center operations.

  • Work with the compliance team and local site teams to ensure that all certifications and warranties are kept up to date for generators and related equipment.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: 7+ years of hands-on experience with generator maintenance and troubleshooting in critical environments, such as data centers, hospitals, or industrial settings.

  • In-Depth knowledge of data center power infrastructure, including generators, UPS, ATS, switchgear, and electrical systems.

  • Strong understanding of diesel, gas-powered, and hybrid generators and associated technologies. (Caterpillar, Cummins, Kohler, MTU preferred)

  • Experience in remote monitoring and diagnostic systems for generators and critical power systems.

  • Experienced knowledge of data center power redundancy schemes and topologies to include uptime and best practices (e.g., 2N, Block redundant, Distributed redundant, etc.)

  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics and blueprints.

  • Experience with operating load banks, automatic transfer switches (ATS), and power monitoring systems.

  • Knowledge of fuel delivery systems and management practices of backup generators to include fuel pump configurations, redundancy requirements, bulk storage and belly tank usage, fuel testing and storage protocols.

  • Experience with the integration of power systems in mission-critical environments.

  • Ability to work in high-pressure environment in a calm manner while responding to emergencies, troubleshooting issues and maintaining uptime. (May require on-call and 24/7 support).

  • Need to be able to lift 50+ pounds when working with heavy equipment and willing to work in various environmental conditions (indoor and outdoor as well as generator enclosures).

  • Able to manage 25% travel

Education / Certifications :

  • High School diploma or equivalent (Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or related field preferred).

  • Certifications in electrical systems, power generation, and/or safety (e.g., electrical license, OSHA, NFPA 70E, or manufacturer-specific certifications) are preferred.
