Position Description
Primary purpose:
Safely and efficiently operate pipeline segments, delivering petroleum products throughout the S.E. region. Controllers operate the pipelines from the Houston Control Center using a SCADA system (supervisory control and data acquisition).
Successful candidate(s) must satisfactorily complete entry level training to become a Products (SE) Pipe Line controller. Training includes classroom training (Houston, TX/Alpharetta, GA), field trips, computer simulation of operating pipeline, written tests of material covered, computer simulation tests and if all the afore mentioned training is successfully completed, on-the-job console specific operator training followed by assessment.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
Responsible for real-time activities related to the scheduling and delivery of petroleum products through the pipeline system, ensuring customers’ needs are satisfied
Responsible for safe operation of the pipeline and related facilities
Responsible for monitoring, recognizing, and effectively reacting to abnormal/emergency conditions
Responsible for maximizing system optimization
Responsible for monitoring quality control
Responsible for effective product measurement
Responsible for maintaining positive customer relations
Utilizes Batch Management System to accurately forecast product movements and maintain stock inventory
Maintains accurate documentation to comply with company and regulatory policies
Monitors pipeline operating conditions for inefficiencies in pumping rates, pump unit setups, delivery rates, pinch (throttling) conditions, and other areas impacting operating costs.
May assist other technical support groups in the development and update of current operating procedures, pipeline standards, operations manuals, and other documentation related to normal and abnormal operation of the pipeline system.
Works closely with the Scheduling group to ensure customers' needs are being satisfied and pipeline facilities are being efficiently utilized.
Become qualified to operate a minimum of 2 consoles with full working responsibilities and remain qualified to operate a minimum of 2 consoles with full working responsibilities
May assist or provide support for projects as necessary when not assigned to a specific console
Position Requirements
Minimum requirements:
Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
Experience / specific knowledge:
4 years work experience, or 2 years post high school education plus 2 years work experience, or 4 year degree
Consistently maintain a professional and respectful demeanor/attitude with co-workers, clients and vendors. Must be able to take direction from supervisor(s), prioritize work schedule, focus on details, and follow company procedures.
Certifications, licenses, registrations:
- Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the Company Insurance Carrier
Competencies, skills, and abilities:
Successfully complete the Console Operator Basic Requirements Assessment (COBRA).
Demonstrate ability to do mathematical calculations (basic arithmetic and interpreting scales and tables)
Proficient in basic computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
Clearly and concisely orally communicate in English with field employees and customers at times when quick understanding must occur and action be taken
Clearly communicate in writing (reports and email)
Analytical and problem solving skills
Ability to accept supervision / direction and work cooperatively with people
Ability to function appropriately in high stress situations
Excellent communication skills and the ability to respond effectively to changing schedules, priorities, and other urgent situations as necessary. External contacts may include shipper representatives, and the general public.
Physical demands:
Must be able to timely and effectively respond to audible and visual alarms.
Ability to quickly manipulate computer key boards
Ability to sit for prolonged periods
Ability to hear and orally respond to oral communications
Must be flexible and able to work effectively in a team environment, as well as independently.
Working conditions:
Working conditions are indoors in a climate-controlled environment
Must be able and willing to work 12 hour rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and must work overtime as required and be reasonably available to respond to and report to work in call-in situations
The successful candidate will be required to clear a DOT drug screen and a complete background check, including credit report (as applicable to the position), after an offer has been extended and prior to being employed
Must be willing and able to travel as needed
Preferred education, experience, certifications, competencies, skills, and abilities: Above the minimum requirements; not required but advantageous in this position:
4 year degree
Liquid pipeline work experience
