Upper Peninsula Power Company UPPCO Substation Operations Supervisor in Houghton, Michigan

UPPCO seeks a Substation Operations Supervisor to join their team in Houghton, Michigan.

This position oversees the coordination, scheduling, and execution of operations and maintenance plans, as well as diagnostic testing for substations, generation plant electrical facilities, and related equipment. It involves supervising Substation and Relay Technicians and reporting directly to the Manager of Substation Engineering & Operations.

WHAT YOU WILL DO.

  • Coordinate, develop and prioritize work orders and crew schedules for maintenance and projects.
  • Complete work to plan, budget and contract requirements; document and communicate work results.
  • Coach, lead, and counsel substation staff in resolving work group and union contract issues.
  • Monitor and develop trained and qualified employees to perform substation tasks in accordance with safety rules and best work practices.
  • Encourage continuous process improvement.
  • Provide technical assistance/recommendations to resolve operating problems and analyze test data.
  • Provide local operating input to the development of standards and designs, selection of equipment, and establishment of safe and efficient procedures.
  • Interact with stakeholders and customers to understand their priorities and schedules; assist in estimating project costs and time commitments/schedules.
  • Respond to emergency situations during normal hours and after-hours callouts.
  • Meet with external customers to provide requested services. Manage customized service contracts and assist in developing large customer contracts for future business growth.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR.

  • Associates degree in relevant field preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 1 or more years' experience coordinating and managing projects or work assignments required.
  • 3 or more years' experience in a leadership position with understanding of HR policies required.
  • 5 or more years' experience in operations, maintenance, or a technical role in an electric substation or distribution facility, preferred.
  • Experience working collaboratively in a union environment helpful.
  • Strong communication, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • A leadership style that motivates, teaches, inspires and builds lasting relationships.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel, as needed, required.
