Job Description Summary
The Environmental Engineering Laboratory and Instrumentation Manager will primarily support the teaching and research activities of the Environmental Engineering Program in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering (CEGE). The position will advance the strategic goals of the Department and University, including creating high-impact undergraduate programs, growing and strengthening graduate programs, and developing strong and sustainable research programs. This position will promote the safe and effective operation of these activities. This position will report to the Chair of the CEGE Department. The Environmental Engineering Laboratory and Instrumentation Manager will work closely with the Environmental Engineering faculty to fulfill the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)
Specific duties related to teaching are to:
-maintain and calibrate equipment used in instructional laboratories, and maintain and operate Environmental Process and Simulation Laboratory unit treatment processes;
-participate in team instruction of CEE4509 Environmental Process and Simulation Laboratory;
-identify, organize, track, and order supplies, consumables, and small equipment;
-assist faculty in coordinating and training graduate students and staff in instrument operation, ordering of supplies, and safety practices; and
-assist department/laboratory supervisors with maintaining laboratory safety documents and personal protective wear, and identify and implement necessary safety measures for instructional labs.
Specific duties related to research are to:
-assist faculty in development of user policies, methods documentation, and safety protocols for laboratory research equipment including, but not limited to, gas and liquid chromatography, spectrometry and spectrophotometry, microscopy, and polymerase chain reaction-based instruments;
-assist faculty with maintenance of research equipment and instrumentation; and
-provide training to graduate students and other staff in the safe operation of research equipment and analytical instrumentation.
Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)
- B.S. degree in environmental or chemical engineering, chemistry, or related field
Required Experience (minimum requirements)
- 1 year of relevant work experience or graduate degree in one of the above fields
Desirable Education and/or Experience
- A graduate degree, or at least 3 years experience in laboratory supervision, teaching, and equipment troubleshooting; Hazmat training
Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)
Demonstrated ability to operate/maintain a wide range of analytical equipment and instruments (e.g., gas and liquid chromatography, spectrometry and spectrophotometry, microscopy, and/or polymerase chain reaction-based instruments);
Mechanical equipment troubleshooting and repair, electronics troubleshooting, and plumbing skills;
Demonstrated ability to write technical documents such as standard operating procedures, equipment operating manuals, and bids or proposals;
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries, and interface well with diverse members of the scientific research and education community, including students, staff, and faculty; and
Demonstrated commitment to a culture of safety
Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities
Ability to support faculty in securing and carrying out extramurally funded research grants
Work Environment and/or Physical Demands
The typical work environment is a laboratory requiring appropriate personal protective equipment.
