Job Description Summary

Provide academic and career advising for students in and prospective student recruiting for the Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences baccalaureate programs and other programs within the College of Engineering. Assist students with their course schedules, degree schedules and the transferring of credits from other universities/colleges.

Evaluate previous coursework regarding degree requirements for the Geological & Mining Engineering & Sciences (GMES) Department undergraduate programs and other COE undergraduate degree programs.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

  • Advise students in GMES baccalaureate programs, associated minors and, providing guidance in all aspects of their programs of study.

  • Assist GMES and COE students with semester planning and course registration conflicts, including filled sections, waivers, wait lists, etc.

  • Promote GMES and COE student success by collaborating with campus services including Career Services, Student Mental Health and Well-being, Waino Wahtera Center for Student Success, writing and learning centers, etc. to assist students in areas such as career advising, study skills, and time management.

  • Review transfer courses from other colleges for applicability to the GMES degree requirements and incorporate into GMES student academic plans.

  • Carefully review degree audits, graduation requirements and previous coursework for GMES major programs.

  • Advise students in other COE baccalaureate programs, associated minors and, providing guidance in all aspects of their programs of study.

  • Assist with creation of GMES departmental marketing and promotional materials such as undergraduate program brochures.

  • Cooperate with the Registrar's Office in maintaining student records.

  • Coordinate and participate in First-Year Orientation, and conduct first-year advising meetings.

  • Disseminate current academic policies and procedures.

  • Participate in program assessment and provide support for accreditation of degree programs.

  • Assist with the creation and updates of department web pages, flowcharts and other advising material.

  • Participate in appropriate departmental and university level committees.

  • Meet with prospective students when faculty is not available.

  • Participate in university, regional, and state-level recruiting and outreach events.

  • Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

  • Bachelor's degree.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

  • One year professional or administrative experience.

  • Experience working in undergraduate higher education student services, or closely related area.

  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations.

  • Experience using personal computers and basic software packages including word processing and spreadsheet software.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

  • Master's degree.

  • One-year professional experience in engineering.

  • Experience in advising undergraduate students.

  • Experience using desktop publishing and BANNER software.

  • Strong interpersonal and written/oral communication skills.

  • Excellent individual, small group and large group presentation skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to use judgment when dealing with confidential information.

  • Demonstrated ability to take the initiative to solve problems.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty and staff.

  • Experience using degree audit reporting software; Banner and WebFocus for accessing student academic information.
