TITLE: Electrical Inspector (Certified)

DEPARTMENT: Planning & Development

PAY GRADE: 14

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

General Statement of Duties

Performs skilled inspection work securing compliance with ordinances and laws governing

the installation and operation of electrical systems and equipment.

Supervision Received

Works under general supervision of an administrative superior.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs inspections of new and existing wiring and electrical installations for light, heat and power

in residences, businesses, public and other buildings to determine conformance with safety

standards, laws and ordinances; checks plans and performs calculations for compliance with

established standards and recommends methods of compliance; investigates complaints of dangerous

wiring and electrical installations for possible electrical causes of fire; contacts power company,

contractors and electricians with respect to installation and major repair work; maintains records,

conducts correspondence and prepares reports; performs related work as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials and techniques involved in constructing,

installing and operating a variety of electrical installations, equipment and appliances;

considerable knowledge of possible defects and faults in electrical wiring and appliances,

standard testing devices and effective corrective measures; working knowledge of municipal

ordinances governing electrical installations and appliances, National Electrical Code

standards and such other ordinances/codes as may be assigned; ability to detect and locate

defective electrical wiring and construction and to ascertain the stages of construction or

installation when defects are most easily found and remedied; ability to contact

building/property owners, contractors, craftspeople and others and to establish and maintain

effective working relationships on inspection and regulatory matters; ability to understand

and work from construction and wiring blueprints, drawings and diagrams; ability to prepare

accurate reports; ability to understand and follow complex verbal and written instructions.

Education

High school graduation or equivalent.

Experience

At least three years as Journeyman electrician on a variety of construction and installation

jobs;

Substitution

Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements

Must be a Journeyman or Master licensed electrician issued by the State of Arkansas; must

be ICC certified as Residential Electrical Inspector and Commercial Electrical Inspector

within 1 year after hire; must be licensed as an Electrical Inspector by the State of Arkansas

within 6 months after hire; must have a valid drivers license and a clean driving record. The

Electrical Inspector will not be permitted to engage in the electrical trade or to be

associated with any contractor or phase of construction.
