Objective

Under the general direction of their Supervisor, ensure the daily operation and maintenance of waste processing equipment. The role involves running multiple batches of waste sterilization daily, ensuring equipment is functioning efficiently and safely, performing regular processing and maintenance tasks, and addressing any technical issues that arise. The technician will work closely with other team members, various departments and their supervisor.

The Waste Management and Maintenance Technician assures compliance to all applicable FDA, OSHA, EPA, EMEA regulations and company standards.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

Collect and transport waste streams to processing areas, including regulated medical waste and plastics identified as recyclable from the laboratory.

Operate and perform maintenance of waste processing/sterilization equipment, ensuring all steps are completed and all safety protocols are followed per SOP.

Complete daily inspections, maintenance, and cleaning of systems per SOP requirements.

Perform routine maintenance activities of equipment and documentation requirements to ensure compliance with local, state, federal and international agencies.

Perform Quality Assurance testing and ensure accurate documentation of results.

Maintain quality and agency manifest documentation for compliance.

Ensure adherence to all safety protocols, including the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Perform Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures during maintenance activities.

Coordinate equipment maintenance and repairs with qualified vendors.

Perform loading of waste recycling truck with electric pallet jack and coordinate pick-up frequency with vendor.

Ensures equipment, waste bins, work area etc. is cleaned and sterilized per SOP and vendor standards.

Ensure compliance with BioLife Testing Laboratory standards and regulatory requirements.

Monitor the loading and processing of regulated medical waste bins, ensuring proper weight capture and secure loading prior to operation of the equipment.

Complete required safety and operational trainings prior to operation of all equipment.

Complete Bloodborne Pathogen Training for the handling and processing of regulated medical waste and ensure anyone assisting in duties have also completed training.

Participate in operational excellence initiatives and projects to drive a culture of continuous improvement to achieve site operational excellence goals (including but not limited to 5S, Value Stream Mapping, Kaizen, etc.)

Other duties as assigned.

Ability to perform routine maintenance and troubleshoot equipment issues.

Proficiency in the use of personal computers and software programs including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Complexity

Ability to lift and move up to 75lbs on a regular basis.

Position requires maintaining large pieces of equipment in the facility.

Capable of standing for extended periods and performing repetitive tasks, which may also involve bending, twisting and lifting on a regular basis.

Industrial laboratory where typical hazardous materials are handled.

Personal protective (safety) equipment is required in most areas.

Occupational exposure to blood borne pathogens.

The physical demands described above are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

EDUCATION, BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:

High school diploma or equivalent; advanced training or certification in waste management or a related field preferred.

Desired:

Experience working with mechanical systems and lock out tag out procedures preferred.

Laboratory or working around bloodborne pathogens experience preferred.

Experience with electric pallet jacks and/or forklifts preferred.

U.S. Hourly Wage Range:

$16.15 - $25.38

The estimated hourly wage range reflects an anticipated range for this position. The actual hourly wage offered may depend on a variety of factors, including the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, specific and unique skills, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job.  The actual hourly wage offered will be in accordance with state or local minimum wage requirements for the job location.

U.S. based employees may be eligible for short-term incentives. U.S. based employees may be eligible to participate in medical, dental, vision insurance, a 401(k) plan and company match, short-term and long-term disability coverage, basic life insurance, a tuition reimbursement program, paid volunteer time off, company holidays, and well-being benefits, among others. U.S. based employees are also eligible to receive, per calendar year, up to 80 hours of sick time, and new hires are eligible to accrue up to 120 hours of paid vacation.
