(2) Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Visitor Information Station (VIS), Maunakea Shared Services (MKSS), located at Hale

pohaku, on the island of Hawai

?i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $4,000 - $4,200/Mon.

DUTIES: Interacts with visitors to Maunakea through the Visitor Information Station (VIS) programs.

Provides safety information to visitors about the hazards encountered on Maunakea and provides advice on how to have a safe trip.

Provides resource protection to visitors to help prevent damage to the sensitive environment on Maunakea. Works as a cashier and stock person at the bookstore. Presents all aspects of VIS stargazing programs to school groups and other special use groups. Performs various housekeeping duties. Must be able to work variable hours. Must be able to work weekends, holidays, and flexible schedule. Drives to VIS from Hilo and occasionally to the summit. Progression from a VIS Interpretive Guide I to VIS Interpretive Guide II may be possible upon demonstrated ability to meet established performance factors and project specific competencies, including satisfactory completion of all required trainings.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

Associates Degree from an accredited community college or at least two (2) years of college level course-work. (High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent and at least two (2) years in tourism, customer service, website marketing, or sales may substitute for an Associates Degree.).

EXPERIENCE

At least six (6) months of experience as an interpretive guide or similar work demonstrating an ability to educate in a professional manner or to provide customer service that is consistent with mission, corporate values and culture of the VIS.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of Hawaiian culture, astronomical, geological, archaeological, natural history, and/or environmental features of Maunakea. Familiarity with the night sky, including the locations of planets, nebulae, etc.

ABILITIES and SKILLS

Ability to use email, Internet, and standard office computer applications. Ability to communicate interpretive material to the public in an informative and interesting manner. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with internal and external audiences. Proficient in all abilities and skills outlined in established performance factors and project specific competencies. Demonstrated proficiency in following projects administrative, operational and safety protocols. Must possess a valid drivers license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal drivers insurance equivalent to Hawaiis No-Fault Drivers Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to follow MKSS Driving Safety Policy. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within six (6) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employees initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Primary work site is located 9,300 feet above sea level with wide temperature variations. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high altitude medical examination on an ongoing basis. Must obtain a medical doctors approval for work at high altitudes.
