Stantec’s engagement with water resources planning initiatives across the UK and Ireland has significantly grown since 2020. This has included working across several Strategic Resource Option (SRO) investigations in England and Wales, WRMPs, Drought Plans and WINEP investigations. This remains a focus for Stantec into 2023 and beyond, helping to deliver PR2024 and preparing for AMP8.

Stantec is seeking ambitious and experienced Water Resources Planners to play a central role in delivering an expanding workload and reputation for providing innovative water supply solutions, as well environmental and regulatory services for a range of public and private sector clients in the UK. The team also provides opportunities to work outside the UK in collaboration with global Stantec offices.

As a member of our Water Resources Planning team, your role will involve providing technical advice and innovation with inputs into water resources-related investigations. It will include undertaking and producing reports and related deliverables. You will work effectively with water companies, regulators (such as Environment Agency, Ofwat and RAPID), design engineers, contractors, planners and other stakeholders to help achieve positive outcomes for projects.

You will have a detailed understanding of water resources and drought planning processes in the UK and wider. You will also have experience of involvement in complex hydrological, hydrogeological and/or water resources assessments supporting water resources management and drought planning, WINEP investigations, wider catchment management, climate change impact assessments and Water Framework Directive assessments. You will also be expected to lead and/or support initiatives to grow and develop projects in this space.

In this role, you will also be expected to provide mentoring to colleagues, supporting the wider professional development of the team, as well as specific skills development. Proactive engagement with professional institutions and learned bodies will also be supported.

As a member of our multidisciplinary and collaborative teams, you will be expected to provide high-quality work within agreed timescales, budget and quality frameworks and ensure technical and quality aspects are well managed, to deliver innovative solutions whilst ensuring client satisfaction. You will support engagement with clients as well as build and maintain effective relationships within and outside the company. Client-facing experience, as well as commercial awareness and understanding, will be an advantage. You will have a broad understanding of the water environment and will be able to support the wider water resources team when required, adding to our flexibility and maintaining consistent utilisation.

About you

You will be an important member of our expanding UK-based water resources team and will have the flexibility to work remotely throughout the country in response to opportunities.

To be successful in this role, you will hold a degree in a relevant subject, such as geography, civil or environmental engineering and preferably hold a postgraduate degree in hydrology, hydrogeology and/or water resources management.

You will hold experience in water resources planning having developed or reviewed water company drought plans or WRMPs. Your experience should include the development of components of the supply-demand balance such as demand forecasting, options appraisal, drought trigger development, investment modelling or development of risk and uncertainty. We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds (regulatory, water company or consultancy, covering policy as well as technical) and at different career stages.

Ideally, you will be recently chartered or working towards chartership with a relevant institution such as CIWEM and have experience of working in a multidisciplinary team, liaising with clients, statutory authorities and other stakeholders.
