Stantec Senior Hydrologist in High Wycombe, United Kingdom

Stantec have an exciting opportunity for a senior hydrologist to join our team in Birmingham or High Wycombe. Other locations are possible, on a permanent basis.

Stantec’s engagement with water resources planning initiatives in England and Wales significantly grow since 2020. This has included working across a number of Strategic Resource Option (SRO) investigations, as well as working with all of the regional water resource groups. These workstreams remain a focus for growth for Stantec into 2022 and beyond.

Stantec is seeking a senior hydrologist to play a central role in delivering this expanding workload and reputation in water resources related planning, as well environmental and regulatory services for a range of public and private sector projects. Our current workload includes the production of water resources and hydrology reports and ongoing water resources and related hydrological advice for a variety of clients and infrastructure projects in the water, energy and community development sectors.

As a member of our Water Resources Planning team, your role will involve providing technical leadership, innovation and advice and input into hydrological and water resources investigations. It will include undertaking and producing reports and related deliverables. You will work effectively with water companies, regulators, design engineers, contractors, planners and other stakeholders to help achieve positive outcomes for projects.

You will have an understanding of hydrological science and water resources planning processes. You will also have experience of involvement in complex hydrological and/or water resources assessments such as water resources modelling supporting water resources management and drought planning, wider catchment management, climate change impact assessments and Water Framework Directive assessments.

In this senior role, you will also be expected to provide mentoring to colleagues. This will be to support wider professional development of the team, as well as specific skills development. Proactive engagement with professional institutions and learned bodies will also be supported.

As a member of our multidisciplinary and collaborative teams, you will be expected to provide high quality work within agreed timescales, budget and quality frameworks and ensure technical and quality aspects are well managed, to deliver innovative solutions whilst ensuring client satisfaction. You will lead and support engagement with clients as well as building and maintaining effective relationships within and outside the company. Client facing experience as well as commercial awareness and understanding will be an advantage. You will have a broad understanding of the water environment and will be able to support the wider water resources team when required, adding to our flexibility and maintaining consistent utilisation.

You will be an important member of our expanding water resources team based in either Birmingham or High Wycombe with flexibility to work remotely throughout the country in response to opportunities.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will need to:

Hold a degree in a relevant subject, such as geography or civil engineering with final year specialism in hydrology and preferably hold a postgraduate degree in hydrology and/or water resources management;

  • Be recently chartered or working towards chartership with a relevant institution such as CIWEM;

  • You will have experience of specifying, planning, risk-assessing and conducting safe hydrological fieldwork surveys in the freshwater environment;

  • Be a highly motivated professional with a desire to grow and promote hydrology and water resources assessment and management within a consultancy team and able to build and maintain effective relationships with colleagues and clients;

  • Be experienced working in a multidisciplinary team, liaising with clients, statutory authorities and other stakeholders;

  • Be capable of organising and developing your work with minimal supervision;

  • Be commercially aware and preferably have experience in preparing detailed cost estimates for professional fees for inclusion in tenders/bids and to estimate costs for hydrology and water resources works;

  • Be proficient in using software packages for report writing and presentation of graphic information, including PowerBI for example

  • Be experienced in both rainfall-runoff modelling and the use of water resources systems analysis software such as AQUATOR and / or MISER and PYWR;

  • Hold an understanding of the UK water resources planning approaches.
