This position is based within Instron’s European Low Force Operations Department and will be located at our European headquarters in High Wycombe, UK.
Responsible for the assembly and test of LF hydraulic assemblies, sub- assemblies, test frames and accessories (standard & custom) to ensure they meet the required performance and quality level. This includes the assembly of mechanical and hydraulic accessories that form part of the system test.
Safe Working Environment
To only use hand tools, fixtures, power tools or operate hazardous equipment i.e. overhead cranes or material handling equipment, for which training and authorisation has been approved. Adhere to Health & Safety requirements of the area as identified in the risk assessments and COSHH regulations. Ensure own work areas are kept clean, tidy and well organised for optimum product flow. Inventory is stored and protected with known replenishment processes to support a safe and efficient working environment. Stock accuracy is maintained through regular cycle counting and reporting inaccuracies. Mandatory use of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and product protection (ESD) - where appropriate, with regular housekeeping (daily, weekly, monthly) and actively contribute towards maintaining high 5S standards throughout the department.
Training & Development
Under the guidance of the Team Leader and Production Manager, recommend training needs and/or opportunities to improve processes/procedures. Provide support and aide in the creation of training plans and training for all employees / contractor staff that are either new to the department, or a task. Post training, evaluate performance and determine if team member can perform job/task efficiently and effectively.
Continuous Improvement & Quality
Actively contribute towards the company’s drive to reduce product cost & lead-times and improve product quality and first time pass rates. Recommend improvements to existing and new test specifications and test methods, which are aligned with the ITW philosophies (e.g., In-Lining & PLS). Maintain high levels of quality by assembling and testing products & systems ‘right-first-time’ to latest revisions of drawings and/or test specifications.
Drive customer satisfaction by ensuring that product quality and on-time delivery is achieved and, in the exceptional circumstance of a delay, that proactive communication and initiative is taken to minimise any delay (production or repaired product).
Complete jobs on-time as per the weekly workbench (IFS) and liaise with the Team Leader if there are issues regarding routing times and/or schedule dates. Through the application of good working practices, ensure that own levels of productivity are high by completing jobs within the specified routing times without compromising quality. Ensure test equipment is within calibration prior to use and routinely update ‘First Time Pass Rate’ metric. Provide feedback to Team Leader, Planner, Production Manager, Engineering and/or Quality Assurance of any problems or delays. Understand and accurately complete all relevant documentation e.g., test documents, MRB defect forms, Customer Order release documentation forms etc. and accurately process materials and operations in IFS.
Able to use a wide range of mechanical hand tools and power tools
Can carry out mechanical assembly work using safe working practises
Can understand and follow engineering assembly drawings as well as written & verbal instructions
Safe and knowledgeable use of lifting and handling equipment
Able to carry out basic testing using multi-meters
Computer literate with the ability to use and understand the stock control functions of IFS,
Good basic numeracy skills
Is well organised and has a methodical & disciplined approach to following procedures
An effective communicator who works well as part of a team and independently using own initiative
Able to work to strict timescales and remain calm under pressure
Is reliable and can be flexible on working hours, willing to work overtime to meet the needs of the business
A ‘can-do’ attitude when faced with challenges
Full relevant training will be provided, but as a minimum the following qualifications would be advantageous but not prescriptive:
GCSE or equivalent level Mathematics.
GCSE or equivalent Science base subject.
GCSE or equivalent Craft based subject, Metalwork, Design, and Technology.
