SUMMARY OF POSITION :
Responsible to perform complex laboratory tests on blood, body fluids, cells, and tissues. Identify bacteria, parasites, and other microorganisms, analyze chemical content of fluids, cross match blood for transfusion and organ transplantation, aseptically prepare cells for use in cellular therapies. The results of these tests are used in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S):
Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science from a NAACLS accredited program or Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical or biological sciences program that includes: 16 semester hours of Biology (including one semester of microbiology) and 16 semester hours of Chemistry (including one semester of organic or biochemistry) and proof of eligibility to sit for an applicable certification exam (ASCP, AMT, ACHI or equivalent).
Medical Lab Scientist or department-specific Technologist Certification through ASCP, AMT, ACHI or an equivalent certification agency must be obtained within 18 months of employment for all Medical Lab Scientists at the Penn State Health, Milton S. Hershey Department of Pathology.
Applicants trained outside of the United States must provide documentation of equivalency evaluation of their education and training to ensure it is equivalent to CLIA requirements. The equivalency evaluations must be performed by a nationally recognized organization. Ex. National Association Credential Evaluation Services, Inc. (NACES), the Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc. (AICE). The applicant is responsible for paying the cost of the equivalency evaluation.
